pacbrake compressor cheap fix
pacbrake compressor cheap fix
I'd like to start out by saying that "I'm not a smaaaart maaaan" But today I feel a little smrt.
Cause when the compressor quit on my 03 pacbrake and pacbrake wanted $900 for a replacement kit, I figured I could come up with something else, as I have a compressor for the rear airbags already....
After a year of popping the hood and wiring the exhaust brake closed at the top of the mountain, I have finally taken advantage of the cold weather and warm shop to remedy the problem
Went to Carquest got an electric over air 3 way valve. Spliced the airbags supply line to the new valve, and just took the hot wire off the bad compressor to the new valve.
It works perfect. The throttle and gear shift button both activate the new valve, as I used all the existing wiring and solenoids... I'll put a reservoir tank on sometime so I don't have to pump up the bags while driving, as each time the brake closes about 2 pounds of air is depleted....
$110 including fittings instead of a lot more. Probably old hat to you folks, but thought I'd pass it on.

Viair is who used to supply PAC brake with their compressors. I had gone through 2 compressors while still under the one year warranty. The third compressor was heavy duty and made by another company. I think that $900 is what I paid for the entire EB kit. Maybe they quoted you to replace everything including the brake.
yes, the reason it was so much they wanted to sell me all new compressor and electronics, they said that they could not just replace the compressor because it was such an old model or something....I was very impressed with their ability to return my email asking for support and their willingness to send me a new kit. But all I heard was blah blah blah $900 blah blah blah and figured I'd have do something uglier (and cheaper) to get me down the hill safely....
