fix cheap single stage Air compressor?

got a cheapo, where the pump is on the motor,
5hp / 20 gallon

the motor is prolly good, but's making a racket.

if i take it apart, what to look for, and where to just buy another pump?

it's Harbor Freight specail or some such. paid $175 ~6 years ago,
good service whole time, so no biggie to put some more $ into it for a fix.

I'd buy a new one. Messing around trying to fix and old unit who's time has come can become more expensive than buy whole new unit. If you what to pipe the new compressor the old one for more storeage thats a plan, but bandaiding the old one togeather is a waste of time in the end. IMHO.

If you just want to piddle with it, you can pull the head and see if anything is hitting the head like a screw that holds a reed.
If it's an oiled compressor, the rod to crank clearance may be excessive so you might try some thicker oil.

Clunk, it doesnt sound like an oiled compressor.... it sounds about like this one here: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=47065

04ctd, If it were me, I would replace the whole thing, take the compressor motor and pump off the top of that one, keep the tank, pipe the two together with 1/2" air line and use it for more air storage. You may want to consider a bigger compressor, unless that one met your needs well.

My $0.02

well, i figured since a bigger/better/new one was $300, i would fix this one.
i turned it on tonite, it just made one funny noise last time,
tonite, it's broke bad. motor runs - knocks a bunch, no psi being built

i don't really have space in the garage for a big one, and the 5/20 is perfect for occassional use.

i google'd and never did find "parts" for sale, just the whole thing.
guess they are disposable in that price range.
