P0628 - Lift Pump?

Well this morning the truck was running happily down the road and then just died. No stutter or anything, just went from running along to not. Pulled code P0628 which is usually the lift pump. The truck is an '04 with the stock pump. It is in warrantee (7/70). My problem is that the dealer can't even get a tech to look at it until Saturday if he comes in or Monday. I asked if they have the lift pump in stock and they said no, they will order it when the tech says so. This dealership has been great and even offered me a new '07 Cummins loaner for the weekend (of course they want a sale too).

Has anybody ever seen the P0628 code and not had to replace the pump?

If it wasn't under warrantee I would have already ordered the FASS or Glacier, but this is their $$$.

Should be under the Cummins no cost warranty although they will try to stiff you the $100 deductable under the 7/70 warranty. It is part of the emissions system I believe, don't know why but that was where I was advised that it was from. They will have to call DC to confirm but everyone I know that had this problem and complained got their $100 back. They will remove the on filter pump then replace it with the in tank unit. On my 04.5 it seems to work better but with all my other problems this one was minor.

Remember Cummins warranty:
up to 5 years 100k miles, no cost
over 5 years under 100k $100 deductable

Hope this helps....

Thanks. That is what I have read everywhere too. I don't think they will try to get me for the $100. This dealership has a good reputation and so far they are doing ok by me. I just wish the work would go a little faster but they said they only have one guy working on the diesels.

Well, I talked to the Tech yesterday and he wants to change out the ECM first. I said that sent the low voltage to the lift pump so that is probably bad. Everything else works just fine, but he said he didn't want to do the lift pump.... Guess it is easier for him to do the ECM. It is getting pretty inconvienient for me to be without my truck, if he doesn't have a better answer for me soon, I will have to think of something...

Anybody have the P0628 code not be the lift pump?

I got the same code a few weeks back, but it was the lift pump. Mine went out on a Friday evening and I had to wait until the following Wed. before a tech could look at it because they were at some sort of training... I was told then that the lift pump was on back order nation wide and was looking at over two weeks for the repair. My dealer called around and found me another one but I was without my truck for a little over a week. Ask them to go ahead and order the new lift pump now instead of waiting, they'll eventually need it anyhow even if you don't need it.

Yep after all kinds of scrambling today, the new lift pump should be in tomorrow and be under warrantee. They did say $100 deductible, but I will look into that more too.
