Ok need a little advice on tire size.

Ok running toyo 285/75/17 now about time for new tires. Pretty sure I am going to go with the Nitto Dura's this time. I like the 285/75 size but my problem is I tow alot around town. I am wondering if I go with the 285/70 if the smaller diameter will help improve my MPG, anyone made this comparison?? What about the difference in High way MPG, got the auto trans.

Ok so ideas on size, I really dont know how much difference it will make. That is why I am trying to see if anyone else has played with it before. Thanks guys.

I've had stocker size, 285/70/17s, and 35'' mud terrains, and now 285/75/17 Nitto Terra Grapplers. The 285/75/17s are my favorite size. They fill out the wheel wells nicely and my mpg went up about 1.5-2mpg over the 35'' Muds. Im not sure how much difference was because of the size and width, or the tread design. Im planning to stick with the 285/75/17s as I think they are a great all around size for our trucks. I think the narrower tire helps with reducing rolling friction.

If you don't like the Toyos, im sure the Nitto Dura Grapplers would be nice. Or for an all terrain....get Terra Grapplers.

I like the toyo's but I got around 30k miles out of them. I do alot of towing, some jobs the 6k trailer never gets unhooked, other jobs I can leave it. Just depends, but that is the small trailer, the big one has touched 20k lbs for short runs. I thinking the dura's will make towing better.

what did you feel was the difference between the 285/70 and the 285/75? Mainly mpg concerns, everything else with the 285/75 is fine, truck makes good power and never been a issue there

I don't think the mileage difference between (285/70s vs 285/75s) them is significant enough to worry about it.

It's hard to say which is better for mileage on a particular truck. I think the 285/75s are giving me ever so slightly better....but I haven't run the 285/70s in a while.

Do any of you know if these tires would work on a dually with out having to use a spacer. My trucks stock tires are 235/80/17 and work well but trying to find a taller tire to get my speeds up alittle. I have 4:10 gears. Tired of running 63-65 MPH @ 2000 RPM. Would like to go 70 MPH @ 1900 or 2000 RPM.

285 width is about 2" wider.

Thanks! They are stock wheels, that have been sandblasted and powdercoated....almost 4 years ago now. I actually have some H2s sitting in the garage waiting to machine to fit and powdercoat. But I really like the gen 3 wheels too.

Sweet man..I like the the way the stock wheels look black. Think I'm gona go that route. So you threw 285/70's on there? Looks nice...I didnt want to go to a full 33" tire but want a little bigger than the stock 265/70's. Just read some real good things about those Nitto Tera Graplers. Thanks!

The 285/75-17 make you think you got 1.5-2 mpg better. But, unless you recalibrated your speedo, your milage went up only half of that because the 285s are smaller in diameter than the 35's. I got some toyo 285/75-17 & my milage stayed about the same. After 20K miles they are just about wore out. My mudders lasted 45K and the 315 BF Goodrich Allterains lasted 60K. STAY AWAY FROM TOYO.

I'm leaning towards the 275/70-18 (about 33") because:
1. The stock ECU (I was told) will speedo correct up to 33" tires w/o a programmer
2. Barely a 1/2" wider than 265/70-17 I have now.
3. The General Grabber HTS was rated by Consumer Reports as having lower rolling resistance than many of the tires mentioned here and is still E-rated.
4. I rarely take my travel trailer off-road where I need a traction tire.

Just my $0.02

I corrected my pinion factor with the Smarty. I used my GPS to verify speed. My tires are Nitto Terra Grappler 285/75/17s coming from 35'' BFG KM2 Mud terrains. I got about 40K out of the KM2s. I've got about 15K so far on the Nittos....looking good so far...maybe 1/4th worn or less.

If I'm calculating that right(285/25.4=bout 11 1/4 X 0.75 = bout 8 1/4 sidewall 8 1/4X2+17 bout 33 1/2 ) the 285/75/17's are still a little under a 34" tire right? All you have on the front is a leveling kit? Do you ever get tire rub?

I think you are right about the height on the 285/75s. They are slightly less diameter than the 35's.....but thinner and lighter.

I don't notice any tire rub with my current tires. I had a little with the 35'' muds, but even it wasn't an issue.
