Well, OK I've read all these responces. I changed my 04 CTD oil at 5500 miles, 9500 on the truck, and it was NASTY. What do I need to look for, get tested, how, when, where, why, all those stupid questions.

jd131313, Just keep doing what you are doing. All it means is you are working your truck like it is suppose to be worked. (What it is intended for) not a drive to the office truck.

 

Jerry R is right the oil changes color as its detergents are getting used up and the waste accumulated in the oil is being held in suspension as more waste accumulates the darker it will get this is completely normal. If your oil is perfectly clean when you drain it after 12k this is not normal acculumation of sludge in the oil pan may be happening

 

My first oil change was just over 3k, oil was clean. I wanted to get a Stratapore on it. Now I change every 6 months or 7500. It takes about 6,000 for my oil to turn real dark. I run Mobil dino oil.
