What type oil and how muchin fresh getrag?

Should get my rebulit Getrag tranny back tommorow and try to put it back in this weekend. What oil should I run to start with? 5w-30 and then drain after a few thousand miles? Then synthetic?. I know they need to be overfilled but I read the other post on here where someone said they put in 7 quarts? Is that overkill? Can you actually fit that much in the tranny? Thanks, Matt

Most folks add about a litre and a half or two of your little quarts above what the spec's call for. I just remove a bolt from the top of one of the pto plates and fill till it starts to run all over. I "think" it is about right. The Getrag is a good gearbox and I will trade it's low rpm rattle and need to be overfilled for the bad fifth gear of the NV's any day. The getrag is a much under-rated tranny IMHO opinion any way. I pull a fifth wheel long distances every year and have yet to have the Getrag give me grief on the road. Keep the rev's up and overfill it and it will treat you right.

I believe that was me, and I am able to fill with 7 quarts because I added a set of "fast coolers" which are basically an extruded aluminum piece about 6inches long that bolts to the pto ports and add 1 quart of oil capacity per, so 2 quarts total. That puts the oil level the same as 5 quarts on a tranny without these coolers.

I would do regular 5w30 then change to synthetic after a while, just to make sure you don't have any leaks, etc...
