I recently switched to rotella synth, love the way the truck starts in the winter, but I have noticed the oil pressure drops at idle (not near red, but almost to the low marker of the "normal" area. Is this normal with synth, or do I have a problem? I have 20,000 on the truck, cummins says that was enough miles to switch, since I work my truck, so that shouldn't be it. I'm not interested in starting "oil wars 2005", just want to make sure I don't have a problem.

Its normal with either syn or dino oil. Try a search, its been discussed many times.

 

That's a good thing. What that is telling you is that your engine is not working as hard to run now. This would normally equate to better fuel mileage but most of us kind of kill that with a heavier foot

 

That's funny. I just noticed the same thing yesterday.......

 

Don't worry about the oil pressure being in that range....it is normal. If you were to put a direct reading guage on it, it would be higher than what the stock guage reads. Not to worry, drive and be happy. If it drops to zero and the oil light comes on, panic!

 

The guages in the gauge cluster are not real accurate. Your oil pressure will actually be higher with a real gauge. DC has a program that puts the gauge where they think it should be according to the signal to the computer.
As mentioned, the only time the factory gauge is accurate is when there is no pressure and the lights and chimes are telling you theres a problem.

I have considered putting an oil pressure gauge in my truck but I don't have all that space nor do I want to have a boatload of gauges hanging all over the truck.

A digital scrollable screen that does it all with redline and low limit defaults would be COOOOOOOOooOooOooL
