Question Oil Level too high

I drained my oil,yes all of it, & added 3 gallons about 2K mi. ago & I checked it today . It looks like it is about 2 Qts. overfilled. It does not smell of anything but oil(ie. fuel,coolant,etc.). It seems like I read on here somewhere about other people having this problem, too. Should I drain some or is this normal? TIA

mine holds 11 qts. It comes just short (1/8") of the end of the crosshatch'd marks on the stick.

Not normal and yes drain some... too much oil can damage as much as not enough. Put a fumoto drain valve on and it will make it very easy in future to drain a little like for oil analysis.

It has never does this before doing the EXACT same process of changing the oil. What do ya'll think could be the culprit? I have put 3 gallons(12 qts.) in it everytime.

That is different. I am assuming you changed the oil filter too. It should be exactly 12 qts for change when oil filter is changed too. you got me.

Dipstick mystery.

Mine reads way above full after changing the oil and filter recently and adding 12 qts. It read way over when new also.

Keep an eye on it. If you overfilled by mistake easily fixed. If not...Rising oil level could be symptom of bad injector. Fuel in oil is bad.

Oil creeps up the dipstick when these trucks sit. My brother recently mentioned his truck gets overfilled when he has an oil change done. We pulled the dipstick and it looked to be at least 2 quarts over full. We wiped off the dipstick and checked again and it is right on. If that is not your culprit then you should be very aware to watch for rising oil level from an injector problem.

Is the truck level when you are checking it? Or parked in the same spot that you usually check it?

It could be fuel in the oil. The ULSD fuel doesn't seem to have much of an odor. It might be there but you're not smelling it.
Ted
P.S. My 07 5.9 takes 3 gal. right at the full mark.

Are you changing it when it's good and hot? I did mine once when I had only driven it about a mile or two and it must not have been hot enogh for all of it to drain out, it was down to a few drips at a time then I finished up the change and ended up putting in 12 qts and it was over by a qt, had to drain the extra.
Another thing as someone mentioned, make sure you are pulling the stick out wipeing it off, and then insereting and checking.
