same thing happen to me when i changed oil the first time, oil level went right to the top of the saftey zone, the next time i changed it, i held back a quart it . that got me to the bottom of the saftey zone,,so i added 1/2 quart and i was good,,right there in the middle.
I"m sure it isn"t going to hurt anything being at the top of it.

As EdPaul has found - if you just dump 3 whole gallons in you will be slightly overfilled. The capacity is 3 gals, and you never get 100% out when you drain.. In any case, you will be fine as long as it's close/not too far over, and next time try adding 11.5 or 11.8 qts...

the distance between the low and full marks on your dipstick is actually 2 quarts.

Do not over fill. You might fug up your crankcase ventilation system and you will have added drag to the crankshaft when it swings through the sump.

You should have it at the top of the full lline, but not past it. Running it halfway inbetween (1 quart low) is also fine.

11 quarts per the service manual. owners manual, service manual and I all advise you not to overfill your crank case. This always puts me right into the safe zone.

My "2004 Ram Truck Diesel Owner's Manual" Page 378 fluid capacities reads U.S. 12.0 qts
Metric 11.4L. 3 Gals thats what I always put in. Brings it to the top of the safe zone.I like buying a case and having enough, with my old psd I bought a case and was a 1/2 gal short

3 gallons; never made a difference if the gallon jugs were from Mobil, Rotella or Amsoil.

It's just not possible to get every bit of oil out - so three gallons typically overfills just slightly every time I've tried it. 11.5 quarts or so does just fine. You don't need to be all the way up to the max line - it's not like this is a 4 quart system and you really need to have all you can in there...
