oil level going up
oil level going up
please save me some search time. most likely fuel dilution.
it goes up maybe a pint in 5000 miles. from just below the full mark to just past the full mark.
i check the oil level after it parked in the same spot after it has been shut off for 12 + hours
what are the top 3 reasons?
i have been changing the oil every time i notice it up a little. it is not that bad, but that is not good!
Thanks.

if it was a cracked line or loose fitting, it would be way worse than what little i have and leak external.
the feed tubes in the head are surrounded by fuel, so if there loose or cracked that would be putting fuel in the return loop not the oil and most likely not start.
how do the injectors being bad cause that? not atomizing the fuel and by-passing the rings? or just leaking out the exposed top of it? the top O ring on the injector could cause it.

Beware that sometimes you can get a bad reading from your dipstick. I thought my oil was going up when I checked it after about 500 miles after a change. The dipstick was over the full mark so I thought I was in trouble. After closer examination, and taking the reading from the other side of the stick, the oil level was perfect. Apparently there must have been a tad bit of oil in the tube or something to cause the reading to indicate fuller than it actually was. Wipe the stick off and check it several times.....both sides of the dipstick......it may have been a false reading. Or you could have an injector leaking.

These trucks are really sensitive to any kind of slope. So like Pull Dog says, get your method consistent.
Try the drop of oil on the napkin like gcssr says.
Next oil change(or even now) send a sample off for analysis. That is only fool proof way to determine if there is fuel in your oil.

trust me, i parked it in the exact same spot, let it set for several hours/days before checking, then the determination was made of making oil (checking both side of the stick)
i changed the oil and left it half way between add and full on purpose and watched it daily for months to come to the conclusion the level comes up some.
same question, how does injectors cause fuel in oil?

^^This would be my recommendation also. As the other's said it is most likely fuel from a failing injector that is causing your engine oil level to go up.
I would send in an oil sample to confirm it and try not to drive the truck too much until you know what is going on.
External fuel line leaks, internal connector tube leaks will not make it to the crankcase. Only fuel leaking thru or from an injector into the cylinder will make it to the crankcase.
Fuel can also leak out of the front seal of the CP3 into the front gear cover & making it to the oil pan.
How is your coolant level? Going down? It's also unlikely is coolant leaking into the crankcase causing the oil level to go up and the coolant level to go down.
Any bubbles in the radiator or overflow tank or the overflow tank overflowing?
All of these indicate a blown headgasket which could cause coolant to leak into the crankcase.

Absolutely not true, if your rings are bad they will bypass whatever fuel is leaking down directly into the engine oil. This is a progressive problem, you may have had a leaking injector(s) and not realized it, then after time it multiplies and before you realize it the problem has compounded exponentially.
As others have wisely stated, sample the oil and send to the lab of your choice.
Wish you the best.
