Oil Level

I just checked my oil, and noticed the level was about a 1/4" above the safe zone on the dipstick. I have just under 4000 miles on it and going to service it at 5000. Has anyone noticed where the level runs at after you change the oil? Is this normal? It seems to run fine and the mpg is real good.
Thanks Wayne

Was that oil checked cold or after the engine was good and warm
If it was checked cold then that may be correct. You should chek the oil level about 15 minutes after the engine is shut off, this is according to DC in the owners manual

It had sat for about 2 or 3 hours when I checked it.

3 gallons after an oil change puts the level at the high level mark on the dip stick - after sitting for half an hour.

Did the level go up since the last time you checked? Might be a good time to keep an eye on the level, and be consistent when you check it, and where you check it (same ground level). 2-3 hours is plenty of time for the oil to drain back into the pan. A rising oil level is a red flag.

Don't sweat it too much on the oil level ..........they read high with 3 gallons ,mine always does and besides they have a breather hose to vent if it is too full . I agree on watching it and smell it when you check it , if you smell diesel you need to get it checked as fuel diluting oil will make it rise . These engines seal like no other and have the best oil systems out there , no need to sweat it .enjoy these beasts !!

The max level on the dipstick is there for a reason, you're not supposed to fill over it. A lot of people are lazy and just dump 3 full gallons in and run overfilled. While that's their perrogative, I wouldn't recommend it.

Gichugoat, is this the factory fill of oil? Many people have found that their oil was overfilled from the factory. Mine was.

I always use 10 1/2-11 quarts with filter and level is at the full mark. I would also think those that just pour in three gallons are overfilling it.
