oil filter location

I heard it's a pain in the EDIT to get at the oil filter on the 5.9 Cummins. Any truth to this? Gotta change mine out soon.....

Nope, just reach up your arm and pull it off. If need be some guys pull off the air filter to get easier access.

I've never had any oil seep down the sides of the filter upon removal, just bring it straight down without tilting it. Some people wrap a zip-loc bag around the filter to eliminate a mess.

I don't have any problem with mine. Sometimes I need to use a set of filter pliers, but I can usually get it from the bottom no problem. Normally, I'll get the truck up to temp, then let it sit for about 20 minutes before I drain the oil and change the filter. If I have that time, usually there will not be enough oil in the filter to spill. I put a couple of wal mart bags over the filter before I spin it off, it keeps oil from going everywhere if I spill it.

No problems for me either. A good filter usually can accommodate an End Cap Oil Filter Wrench ($7 bucks at WM) for the times I over tightened the old filter. After that its like the other guys say.

It's straight forward. I warm up the engine for a 3 minutes or so, just to get the oil warm so it drains easier (just my theory). How hard it is to un-spin depends on how tight the previous person tighten it. Whether you tighten it by hand or wrench, some say stop when its 'snug' and/or add another 1/8-1/4 turn more.

Regardless of how 'snug' you make it, after you start the engine and the pressure builds up, if you see oil seeping out, then another 1/8-1/4 turn more and you're set.

Piece of cake getting to it straight up from the bottom of the truck. Two 12" extensions and a cam style oil filter wrench make it a breeze IMO.

I use the metal end cap type filter wrench, with a long extension from underneath.

I find it really easy to change, without spilling any.

Yep, that works too. I opted for a one stop shop with the cam style since I use a filter without the flutes on the end.

That cam style does look slick.
