Re:Oilguard By-pass filter location

Whatever you do find a location that allows your to easily change out the filter element. I've heard it's a real mess to change. Especially if it's in the Engine compartment. I would look for somewhere under the truck to mount it.

Does the oilguard come with hoses? Is so are they hydraulic type with good fittings? Just wondering.

Re:Oilguard By-pass filter location

I had an Oilguard bypass filter on my last diesel. The replacement filters are cheaper, however it is a mess to change and you almost always burn your hands a little bit. The problem is people generally change their oil warm/hot and you have to unscrew the cannister, and then unthread the filter from the head. I would have gotten the amsoil system if I had to do it again, but oh well, they both work about the same as far as filtration goes. I would also agree, mount it underneath the engine somewhere, although the least amount of hose possible is always preferable.

Don't get me wrong, I like the Oil guard system overall. But for the price difference I don't think you are saving much over the Amsoil system.

Looks like the kit for the cummins is $160. The hoses on the system in my opinion are questionable, meaning they are not bad, but could be better. I have one Amsoil customer that has an oil guard in his TDI and he says his hoses seep oil.

On the other hand the Amsoil system uses Hydraulic hoses, with hydraulic compression fittings, it's overkill but I haven't seen any problems with them.

On the Amsoil system the filter sizes range from 1 quart to 2 quart capacity So you can choose a size depending on room and lenght of oil drain. Secondly the Amsoil by-pass system is less expensive the single bypass is $120 and includes all hoses, heck you can get the dual remote with both filters included and all the hardware for $186. Just giving you another option to think about.

Mike, I'm interested in the Amsoil system but have never seen one in real life, let alone on a truck.

Do you have any pics of them installed on a 3rd gen to help me picture it?

Thanks,
Chris

Re:Oilguard By-pass filter location

I have the dual remote system on my 03. I think it is a nice unit. I don't have any pics but I mounted mine just in front of the front pass. wheelwell. These trucks are seriously lacking for good spots for such things. I spent more time looking for a place to mount it than the install. In the end I had to do some fabrication but I am happy with how it came out and filter change will be a snap. Thanks Bryan
