Oil filter leaking?
Oil filter leaking?
Hello All,
I noticed the other day while under my truck that my oil filter is leaking oil. I wiped off the little bit I found on the bottom of the filter and loosened and retightened the filter 1 full turn from point of contact... It's still seeping, just enough to show a drip of fresh oil at the middle of the bottom of the filter. I think I've got a bad filter.
BTW I use the Fleetguard Stratapore filter.
Any thoughts?
Jamie

I've seen at least 6 bad filters in the last year at my shop. (Valvoline, rebadged purolator) We do about 400 oil changes a month, so the ratio is pretty small. They leak from the top seam. I've not seen a bad one on a Cummins though . Replace it and recheck it.
OK... I did not have two rubber gaskets on it, just one. It looked to me to be defective. looking at the rubber gasket from the side, it looked like about a 1 inch section sat deeper into the filter causing a poor seal.
new filter doesn't leak.
Is it OK to tighten a new filter 1 full turn, b/c that's what I've done since I bought the truck new. Or should I just go 3/4 of a turn on like the directions on the filter say to?
thanks for your input,
Jamie

An oil filter leak that is only a tiny drip won't be double gaskets. I had that experience on a Mustang 5.0. When you start the engine and have double gaskets on the filter, you have essentially NO seal. You will almost instantly have many quarts of oil on the shop floor. JOIBO.
I did look a the gasket briefly and tried to place it back in the grove of the filter. This was hard to do b/c the ring was now about 1/4 too big in circumference. My Cummins parts guy said to bring it in and if he can see that it's defective he'll give me a new one at no charge

Realy I would, but you got to keep filter clean.
