oil leaking from filter

I noticed the other day I was leaking some oil from the filter. So, I wiped it off and soon it started leaking again. Took it to the dealer and they said it was a crack in the filter. Anyone else had this happen?

Someone recently posted on one of the forum that a crack in the filter resulted in leak that cost him an engine. Lost like 7 qts of oil. Oil all over the place though. It's a good idea to also check your filter if the dealer changes your oil. Some reports of the dealer not putting them on tight.

I run into that constantly... Filter is loose enough that when the truck is running and the pressure is up it leaks out and drips off the filter..They have a spot in the driveway. I change it and it never happens again.... I get a new permanant happy customer!

I had that happen too. I went a little tighter with the filter on the next change and it fixed the problem. I do use a wrench and an extension just because it's easier to reach that way.

Yep, I had a leaking oil filter that led to the loss of about 1/2 the oil in just a few minutes. It was a Fram that split open about 1/2 inch on the side. Thankfully, no damage to the engine but after that, I went to a filter that had enough metal to hold the higher pressure. Numerous contacts with Fram (Honeywell) were for naught. They said it was my fault that the filter split open. I've been changing my own filters for 55 years but this was the first one to split along the side.

I've seen the Mopar (aka all mighty Fleetguard) filters with thin areas that actually weeped oil right out the side. I had a customer that wasn't comfortable with "hand tight" and chose to tighten his filter with a wrench. Put a small dent in the filter which eventually ended up being the point of rupture. He bought a new engine.

I had a Fleetguard gasket leak after 2000 miles in September. It was not overtight. Removed, inspected gasket looked good, re installed and still leaked. The gasket (rubber) seemed to be stiffer than normal. Changed to new filter and okay. I have changed several hundred filters, but maybe a brain lock happened.

Last year Chrysler had some weak filters that were rupturing around the flange. Had one my self leak after only 500km of driving. Dealership replaced it no charge.
