Oil consumption and other problems (long)

Hey fellas!

The drama begins...

My dad bought this truck used in December of '05 from Patterson Chrysler Dodge Jeep in Mt Airy, NC. (I would stay away from them...) He bought this 2004 Laramie 2500 4x4 with what he thought was 22,000 miles on it. Well, it turns out the body had 22,000 miles on it but the motor had less than 200 miles on it because they had to replace the motor because of a stuck injector and the guy that owned it decided to trade it in. My dad drove it back to Florida and then a week later they drove back to NC to spend Christmas. On the way back to Florida they got off the interstate because the fuel level was getting way low, they had filled up not 200 miles ago. When he gets out of the truck he sees diesel all over the truck. He then takes it to the local dealership and all they do is drain the oil and diesel out and change two injectors. Remember it was supposed to be getting broken in but instead it got driven with diesel for many miles. Now it has about 6000 miles on it since then and it is using about 1 quart every 1000-1500 miles. I thought that was kind of excessive so I just got off the phone with Cummins and get this. The gentleman I spoke with said that the motor that's in this truck, the tolerance from Cummins is 1 quart ever 400 miles! Does that sound even remotely sensable to ya'll?

Thanks.

I would agree 1 quart every 4,000 miles. At 1 quart/ 400 miles I guess you would never have to change the oil as it would be moving through the engine so fast it never would never get dirty.

I would have Dodge take the truck back and perform a blow by test, If it passes that. Have them do an emmisions test on the engine. I bet it won't pass. Either way it should not be burning a quart of oil every 400 miles.

Yeah, 1 quart every 4,000 miles does sound somewhat reasonable but every 400 miles...I don't think so.

Just to clarify, his is burning about a quart every 1000-1500 miles. The Cummins rep said that 1 quart every 400 miles is ok, which I think is total B.S.

Thanks,

Jerry

Just to add fuel to the fire.....

The only time my oil has gone down was when I drew 2oz out for analysis.

Other than than for 3800 miles, the oil level has not budged! BTW I have 3800 miles on the truck!

HTH

I never add oil between my 10k oil changes; not that the level has ever changed either.

It isn't burning it, its leaking it somewhere. Is it blowing out the breather tube?

I'm going to call a Cummins certified repair shop on Monday and see what they have to say. Thanks for the responses.

Sounds like he washed down 2 cylinder walls and it got the piston/rings, and scored the cylinder walls. I saw a motor at my local dealership that had this happen. It actually melted the top of the piston. If this happens to me I am just going to burn it up. They can give me a new longblock and turbo under warranty. When this happens if you don't shut it down ASAP you may not be so lucky.

A quart every 400 miles is completely ridiculous!!!! Outrageous to tell you that's OK!

My Cummins is the tightest engine I've ever had. I'm getting close to 80,000 miles now and I change the oil every 10,000 miles. It has never used a quart between changes.

400 miles is OK?! No way is that OK. Maybe after 300,000 miles and while towing heavy, but not till then. Something is wrong.
