Oil Concern

Changed my oil today at 3k miles. Oil was pitch black. This really concerns me in that it's an indicator of exhaust in the oil. Switched to Ams Oil 15-40. Has anyone encountered this?

Go back out and check your oil again. I am willing to bet that it is already black. These third gen trucks have been doing this since the beginning when they came out with the third injector pulse to improve hp and quiet the motor knock down. Do a search and you will see this has been talked about before.

Also, bypass filters will not stop the oil from turning black, so do not waste your money on them unless you plan to run longer oil drain intervels like the 30,000 miles between drains with an oil sample done every 10,000 to 15,000 miles.

Definitely don't be concerned. Pretty much anything 04.5+ will turn the oil black even before fresh oil has been added after an oil change...it turns black as soon as it leaves the bottle going into the engine!

Seriously though anything 04.5+ does this and many have done oil analysis and they show up good even though the oil is black. It seems that anyone who owns a pre 04.5 (non 600 series) says the oil stays honey coloured for a long time. Colour aone isn't an indication of oil condition so not too worry.

Don't worry about the color of the oil. I run a By-Pass system and haven't changed the oil in over a year and about 20k miles. The oil will be dark usually the same day you install it. If you use a white paper towel or napkin you will notice that you can still see thru it slightly. Don't Worry, Be Happy

If you are concerned, just run an oil analysis. I used Blackstone Laboratories in Fort Wayne, IN. Had the results in less than a week! Cost was somewhere around 25 bucks, and they can also tell you how much additive is left in the oil if you want to extend the service intervals further. here's a copy of mine.

changed oil turned black quick

Changed the oil, day before yesterday. It was nice light color going in. Drove to china mart later in the day. checked it to make sure it was at the correct level and it was black-er already.
Kinda funky thinking black oil = good

My 2003 RAM 2500 Quad Cab w/305*555 oil stayed nice and brown for several thousand miles after an oil change; the 325*610's and 350*650's do turn black nearly almost immediately. I thought my wife's 2005 Jeep Liberty Limited 4x4 CRD oil was black and nasty until I changed the oil the 1st time in the Blue Bus.
