O2 sensor in a diesel?

I was just thinking about using a O2 sensor for tuning. I don't know any reason why it would not work other than the soot clogging it up. I think it would be good for guys that want power but no smoke. I know you can get a simple air/fuel ratio gauge and add or remove fuel based on those readings.
