I just bought an 05 dually with the g56 in it, my question is what is the differance in the nv 5600 and the g56, streangth and durability wise, do they use the same size clutch?
was the 5600 offered in 05?

early g56's had problems with case cracking due to inadequate support at one of the bearings. do a search here and you will find much more info.

The G is alloy case instead of iron, apparently uses a dual mass flywheel, has lower 1st and reverse, and lower high gear...

sorry for repeating a question, after doing some searching and a lot of reading I can report back and say that what ever king of flywheel or case its pretty strong.
My truck has just over 1000 miles on it and all I have done is straight pipe it and put on the quad race box, I was a bit worried that on the 140 horse setting that I would slip my clutch but I can go from 2nd to 3rd and roll all 4 back tires pretty good and then bark em going into 4th, after a new intake and better exhaust I think with a short throw shifter it would probably slip the tires going into 5th and on a side note if anybody is thinking of getting the xzillarater, get it, its pretty bad, now I just need to fiqure out what box to stack with it, any suggestions?

Maybe nylon sycro's?

The nv trannys, at least the NV4500, has kevlar sycro's

No nylon gears (come on, we're talking about 600 ft lbs of torque)

I'd be interested in seeing how long your truck would last on the 140hp setting while driving it like that.

2000 miles, maybe?

My opinion is that the NV is stronger, but its the flywheel that will really hurt you in the end. When something does fail from doing the above, I bet dollars to doughnuts that its the DMF/Clutch assy. Its essentially the same one that Ford/GM use (clutch only from LUK, not the trans itself). Research those applications and you'll see the weak link.

The new Merc tranny's have been around Euro-land a long time on other vehicles, and word on the street (from my trusted shop foreman plus other posts on this site) is that they are quite reliable. The switch to the Mercedes trannys happened mid January '05 - mine is an April build date, so I've got one too. Have to get used to the location of reverse - but other than that, I like it. Just got back from a cross-Canada trip with a 4500 lb slide-in camper...no problem with slippage. Quad box not installed yet so I can't comment on pushing limits - I've just turned over 7500 miles and I want to break this puppy in and install my other mods first.

what do you think of the shift quality in the G56, a buddy of mine test drove one the other day, and i also drove it, we both found it incredibly notchy, tough to get in gear compared to a NV5600, also had a wineing sound to it, but did not have a growl like mine does a low rpms

I know its new, but mine was never like that,

The NV5600 was offered in 05. I've got one and it was built in Jan of 05. It must be one of the last ones. I never could find a G56 around here to test drive before I ordered one so a buddy of mine, who works at a dealership in CT, had this one.

I'd still like to drive a G56 to compare them, but no dealer around here stocks sticks.

Well put it this way if you have a nv5600 over the G56 the we are the lucky ones and I am quoting a man from south bend. I called about a dd clutch and he asked me what transmission I had and I told him the nv5600 and which he replied "well your one of the lucky ones" I guess since the dual mass flywheel it is much more expensive.
