NV5600 goig out, can I replace it with a G56

At 217,000 miles and all of them towing commercially, my 5600 is getting very noisy and 5th gear does sync anymore.

I was going to get a rebuilt but I was contemplating getting a new G56 for a little more.

Is it going to fit or do I have to modify something ?

get a south bend flywheel for correct thickness, and the corresponding clutch. which looks the same as the nv5600 pressure plate and disk

Why would ya want to? The NV 5600 is easy to rebuild and ALOT stronger! The fact that you got 217,000 miles of hvy towing says something about the strength and durability of the NV 5600. Pull it rebuild it for probably less then $500 drive it for another 200,000 miles.
If you need any info as far as the rebuild goes or what tools you'll need give me a call. I have rebuilt mine twice and 1 of a friend of mine so I may be able to help ya a little.

My 01 was flawless after 246 k of constant trailer pulling and the 05 I have now is doing great. I bought the truck I have because of the 5600 but got the plastic intercooler as a bonus

Hey guys,
The NV 5600 is a great trans. I know the one that I had in my 03 held up under some pretty tough abuse. The reason I had to go into mine was because I broke high gear a couple of times. My truck had over 600 hp and I used everyone even hooked to a load so I kept taking the teeth off high gear. I sent the last set of gears to Performance Cryogenics and the last set is holding up great. If you look at some of my past posts you can see some pics of the carnage.
As far as getting parts I haven't had any trouble getting parts. If ya need any help drop me a line and I may be able to help ya out.
Good luck,
Topper

Any problems with the synchros? My ttrans has had the "notchy" shifting since new and some times I cant get in in gear momentarily does not seem to be getting any worse though.

So far so good with my G56, in fact I love the thing!

Mind you I only have a little better than 60,000 miles. So ask me again in another 200,000 or so and we will see where we are at.

I will say that I really do preffer driving it comapred to my Buddies '05 with NV5600.

I did manage to kill the 4500 in my '99 at about 160,000 miles.

I would rate my G56 as the best shifting, most pleasant truck transmission I have ever driven.

So would I, but that final drive ratio is the pits - and the main reason I passed on an 06 with 0% financing to pay a lot more for my 05

Thanks guys, I think I will stick with another NV5600, it's been proven reliable up to the end. Even while going out, I thought maybe the newer G56 was a tougher type.

I was in Ft Myers, FL heading home to MN hauling a CAT 287 skidsteer (10,550lbs) and a BMW Z3 (approx 2500lbs) on my PJ 40ft flatbed (approx 8500lbs), for a total of approx 21,000lbs towing. Transmission became noisier and noisier in 6th gear. Undercarriage looked a little wet on tranny area, so I figured I was low on oil. Pulled out in Gainesville, FL and bought 8 quarts of Royal Purple MTF, opened the top and to my surprise it had a lot of oil in it still (AMSOIL Syncromesh), I added 3 quarts of RP, and took off. 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th were very very noisy with some banging in there, 5th gear was flawless, very quiet and smooth, 6th gear just noisy. I drove in 5th until Nashville at the blazing speed of 55mph at 2500rpm. From KY plains all the way to Wisconsin Dells I did it in 6th gear since it was flats and kept a good speed, but I had to give it up and drop back in 5th gear since now ALL the other gears were too scary to drive and even listening, transmission temp was very high, I could not touch the base of the stickshift and top cover.
I was concerned not to break it bad or I wouldn't have got a core for the exchange, which means $ 1000 more to the price.
I managed to pull in the yard with transmission still intact.

My hats off to this unit, I was very impressed it made all the way up here, 1800miles towing heavy.

I have one already waiting for me on monday....

150 rpm difference in 6th is what caused to buy a 05 and pay more??
