I need to change the fluid in my transmission. The dealer gave me fluid for the NV3500 and said it was also the correct fluid for the NV5600. Does this sound right?

 

Yes it is right. I was given the same fluid to top mine off with. Its good for the 4500s too.

 

Actually, the fluid used for the NV5600 is much thinner than the stuff used in the 4500. Not sure if the 3500 and 5600 share the same fluid, but there is a difference between 4500 and 5600.

 

Yep, that's what they gave me also.

 

The parts man at the dealership was full of it then. This stuff ain't cheap either!

We looked at the 4500 fluid first. It was a synthetic, multi-grade rating.

The specification for the transmission fluid recommended by Dodge for the NV-5600 6-speed manual transmission is Chrysler Part No. 4874464 (Specification MS-9224). The price for this fluid from the dealer is ..., well more than you want to pay.

Until recently, the fluid was made by Texaco, and was only sold in bulk quantities with the Texaco label on it. After reading some posts on the TDR on this subject and doing some research, I found that I was able to order the fluid from Pennzoil in 12-quart case quantities for less than $50/case plus tax. The Pennzoil part number for the fliid is 3501. I ordered a case from the Pennzoil Distribution Center in Tucson and received it in four days and did not pay any shipping as I picked it up at the distribution center.

If you are having trouble locating a source for the fluid, you can call Pennzoil at 800-468-6457 and ask for the phone number of the distribution center in your area, and they should be able to get it for you.

Some AutoZone stores also stock the Pennzoil Synchromesh fluid, but availability is limited.

Note that this fluid meets the Dodge specification for the NV-5600, and is not a lubricant from some other application that you are experimenting with. Good luck and happy shifting.

 

The New Venture NV 1500, NV 2550, NV 3500, NV 3550, NV 5600 all use 5w30 Synthetic Manual Synchromesh Transmission Fluid. The NV4500 use 75W90 Manual Transmission & Transaxle Gear Lube. FYI, You can buy Amsoil cheaper then what the dealership charges you for their Dodge trans fluid.

I use Amsoil and overfill by 2 quarts. Never had a problem in 45,000 miles (and other before).

The fluid for the NV 4500 is NOT the same of 5600.

The 4500 can ONLY use (to be safe) the Dealer stuff which is $ 22/quart.
If you overfill be sure to put cover back on correctly, I know somebody that didn't and spilled 3 quarts on the road..... I wonder who could that be, hmmm.

I had... I meant HE had to go back to dealer and get more, well they asked why, and I had to tell the story, no way out..

It was the same stuff.

I did not care for the AMSOIL at all in my NV5600. I tried AMSOIL, Redline and the factory stuff. Thought the factory stuff worked the best. Never was a big fan of how the thing shifted though.

 

Same here. Shifts very good once warmed up.

I just picked up 5 quarts at dealer and they said NV3500 was what I should put in. Only 16 bucks a quart. What a deal.

 

Here's a little tip I learned a while back. If you can do it, check into signing up for Dodge's Business Link program. It gives you priority service considerations over non BL folks and 10% off parts and labor charges on most things except oil changes. That same fluid only cost me $14 and change per quart.

 

A little info I posted on another site in August 2005 :

For those NV5600 six speed owners, you can save yourself some $$ by purchasing the Pennzoil Synchromesh Manual Transmission Fluid (p/n 3501 for the quart bottles, $4.59 per quart) instead of the gear oil sold through your Dodge dealer (p/n 4874464..same stuff, different packaging, $10.60 per quart). The Pennzoil fluid meets Chrysler's MS-9224 specs.

The Pennzoil fluid is available at some AutoZones and O'Reilly's Auto Parts. When I called around town today in Lexington, O'Reilly's Auto Parts on Versailles Road had about 18 quarts in stock (I bought five to be on the safe side, as I live out in the sticks).

You'll need a 17 mm hex head socket to remove the fill plug (tighten to 22 ft-lbs). You can either completely remove the left side (driver) PTO cover and clean the magnet & inspect (have RTV on hand) or simply remove the lowest (middle, 6 o'clock position) bolt...this is actually the drain bolt (tighten to 30 ft-lbs).

I'm changing out the ol' '03 RAM 2500's trusty NV5600 fluid Friday.

I drained and filled the NV5600 this evening after I got in from work. The 57 mile drive from Lexington to my home got the fluid nice & warm, so I feel like a good drain took place.

This pic should aid in whats involved. I used a 14 mm six point socket to remove the lower most PTO Bolt....this is also the drain bolt for the NV5600. After re-filling and test driving, the NV5600 felt as if it shifted slightly easier than before....lots of members on the DTR and TDR sites have noted the same results as well.

All in all, it's a very easy job and requires little effort...it's easier than changing the engine oil & filter.
