New truck, advice on EGT's

Hi,

I just bought the used truck in my sig (50,000 miles). I am intending to eventually have EGT, Trans and Boost gauges in it, but have not done so yet. The truck is totally stock. We're heading out on our first camping trip this weekend and I'm just wondering how to avoid harmful EGT's. I've not had a diesel before and want this thing to last a good long while. I'll only be pulling about 6500 lbs, and not any extreme grades, but just want to know how to adjust my driving style to a diesel.

Also, when my brother was taking it for a test drive he ran it right up to redline and commented how he wouldn't like having to run it that close to redline (he's never had a diesel either). In climbing a grade, what would be a maximum sustained rpm?

Thanks for the help, I'm lovin' the truck!

I pull a boat that is around #6000 lbs, this is my 1st diesel. I have pyro & Trans temp. To get the egt's up to the 1100-1200 range takes a heavy foot. A normal pass on a two lane will get me somewhere around that, but it is only for a few seconds. I have read that sustained temps above 1250 can be a problem if for extended periods of time. Even traveling to the Ozarks, took the hills with cruise @75 mph. The temps would get up to 1100-1200, You could tell the truck was working. Just reset to cruise to 70 and sounded better & temps droped. The transmission stays 140 most of the time. In the Osage Beach, Missouri it was stop and go traffic and really hilly. The transmission started to crowd 180. That was 95* weather and I was staying up with traffic , I slowed down and all was well. I believe if you keep a good heads up driving & listening, you will be fine with your weight. I always drive it in tow/haul when pulling. I don't look at the gauges much now, but it is REALLY nice to know, have fun this weekend.

After pulling 6500# at hiway speed, you may want to let it idle for a minute or so before you shut her down. Keeps the oil from baking in the turbo!
