New Truck

I was thinking about buying me an '05 at the end of the summer. I was wondering if dodge will have these vibration problems, etc. fixed by then? Are there any other problems going on with the new trucks that I should be aware of? I am having my 2000, inframed as of now. I figured that would be a good time to sell it & get me a new one, while I had a cummins warranty on it. warranty always looks attractive to someone who knows what they are looking for. I am considering a FORD crewcab because it has a more spacious cab, but I am a cummins fan. So some good advise would be welcome.

Aside from the 70MPH/2000RPM vibe/drone and the lousy (IMO) mileage, I love my new truck. In fact, it would be absolutely perfect if not for those two things (both of which I feel can be eventually corrected). I've been reading this forum for the last couple of months and I'm not aware of too many other serious problems with these trucks as of yet... just a few minor things, just like all brands will have. Maybe someone else can chime in on that if they know otherwise. Since you are already a Cummins fan, I don't have to tell you about the superior quality there, but I thought I might mention that I've heard nothing but horror stories about the new 6.0L Powerjoke in the Fords.

FYI, don't bank on this, but rumor has it that there is a Mega Cab version in the works for production within the next year or two, so you might want to check into that. Supposedly it will be at least as big as what Ford and GM are offering. But to tell you the truth, my new quad cab is totally adequate, at least for my needs. Unless you frequently haul a lot of full-sized adults, I really don't see the need... it always seems like bigger is better, but I feel that the Dodge cab is a nice compromise between interior room and overall driveability (easy to park and great handling). Anyways, if you want/need the bigger cab... I'd wait to see what Dodge has up their sleeve before buying a Ford. I'd hate to see anybody jump ship to a Ford just because of one thing. Don't get me wrong, I think Ford is a decent truck, but that platform is becoming dated and don't forget about the engine problems... plus they cost about 5 grand more on average than a comparably equipped Dodge.

Good luck in whatever you decide!

I've not really heard of any other problems other than some with lower than expected MPG and the vibes.

For whatever it's worth the TDR's FAQ they send when you get a new membership has an FAQ on MPG. They say that anywhere from 16-20 is "normal" unloaded highway for any of the CTDs. Most of the 600's I've seen are within that range. This thread might be helpful.

70mph noise. I asked my salesperson, who I trust, and he said he's never sold one and heard it had that problem. In the last month's TDR it was mentioned that the frame is real solid and likes to transfer all sorts of noises to the cab. The author said that you could tap the frame lightly and hear it clear as day in the cab. Sort of implying that some of the noise issues were just a case of "it's a truck".

Each has strengths and weaknesses. Drive both and see what you like more. I drove both, I wanted to like the Ford as the local Ford dealer is just great. The Dodge and F150 were close IMHO, the F250 wasn't even in the running. It was loud and the steering was really vague. The '05 might be better, we'll see. The Ford has the 6L. My ford salesperson, who I trust, admitted the '03s weren't good, but said the '04s are much better.

Thanks guys for your input. The only 2 reasons I am considering the FORD are the roomier cab & I figured they should have their engine woes worked out by the time I buy at the end of the summer. I am not a fan of any particular brand, but I won't buy a CHEVY, just because they're LIKE a ROCK. Rocks crack when hit hard enough. If I decide on a FORD, I may look for an 03 that still had the 7.3 in it. Those seemed to perform quite well. They are definetly more popular down in my neck of the woods. I ain't running from the DODGE, I just want to hear nothing but good things before I jump on one. I guess Friday, I will have a new motor in my old 2000. I guess I could drive it another 4 years, though I don't think think the chassis & body will hold up that long. Thanks again for the info.

You'll have a hard time finding a vehicle that has no troubles at all. Search the web long enough and you'll think everything is junk. People only post problems for the most part, and for good reason, it gets old patting each others back for buying "the best truck".

Hey Stevnknapp, I see you finally took the plunge.

Congrats!

Did you get a good deal? You bought the exact same configuration I'm planning to get.

What did they gove you for a lead time?

You must be psyched!

Thanks,

DT.
