Mystery Part chattering on ignition on

Howdy all,

The part shown below is located on the right inner wheel well. When I turn the ignition key to run but don't start the truck, it makes a chattering noise. Mostly the first start of the day. Doesen't do it all of the time. Not sure if it continues when the truck is running. Its a 03 3500 CTD. My cruise is not working. Is this related to the cruise?

Thanks in advance

Yes, that's the vacuum pump for the cruise control.

I believe member TCR had to replace his vacuum pump because the CC didn't work.

Does the vaccum pump supply vaccum for anything else besides the CC?

Noop, follow your line and check for a vaccum leak between the pump and the CC dashpot.

The pump should pull a vacuum on the resorvior tank to lke a 12hg and if no leak it will shut off.it consist of a motor /crankshaft and a diaphram and a switch. If it pulls down and turns off it's good. Look for a leak at the cruise module on the left fender well.

I found 3 places where the hard tubing had holes worn through. I used aviation grade heat shrink tubing, layering it as I went along. Rerouted the lines to avoid future issues. Test drove it & It works like a champ!!!

Thanks to all you guys for pointing me in the right direction
