Which motor oil?

Hi, I am new to the site. (Out of Baton Rouge,LA) I have a 2006 Dodge 3500 dually 4X4. 5.9 Diesel. Only has 5,000 miles on it. Need to change the oil, yep first oil change (don't use it much). Went to WalMart and picked up 3 gals of Shell RotellaT 15W-40 and a Fran filter. My cross-the-street neighbor says it does not meet the warranty requirements. CI-4 ? I can always use this oil in my Mahindra tractor. So what brand of motor oil is considered to be the best for the Cummings 5.9? And where do you find it??

First thing, don't run a FRAM filter. The media has been known to come apart and wrecking engines. Fleetguard 16035 or Wix 51607 are two good filters. Rotella CI-4+ meets the requirements for the 5.9, it's the 6.7 that it doesn't meet. They require CJ rated oil.

Yea, ditch that FRAM! Around here Wal-Mart caries the Mopar Filter for our trucks for less than $10.00.

I ran Shell RotellaT 15W-40 until I got an Amsiol bypass, then I went with Amsoil.

Which oil

The Rotella w/ CI and CI +4 you can get at Wally World. Another oil that has those additives is Valvoline Premium Blue Classic. It can be ordered at NAPA or O'Reillys and probably other auto parts stores on special order. You need that additive to protect especially the cam lobes and journals. The reason it has been taken out of most diesel oils is that it kills the CAT and that's probably why it's not rated for the 6.7 as it has the CAT as do some other of the 5.9s.

If you happen to loose your CAT it is the way to go. You can also get the additives you need at this site:

www.zddplus.com

Not cheap but then again neither is your engine.

Our WMs carry the Mopars as well. I buy my filters from either Scheid Diesel or Genos. I can buy a Fleetguard Stratopore (best filter out there IMO) for less than WM sells the Mopars.

As far as oil goes, the 5.9 Cummins is really easy on oil. Most any 15w-40 you will find will work great in a Cummins.

Right now I'm running Mobil Delvac 15-40. I bought it for $6 a gallon last Spring.

Shell Rotella
Chevron Delo
Mobil Delvac
Valvoline Premium Blue (endorsed by Cummins)

All of the above will work great.

Thanks for the information! I came across this site about a week ago and have picked up a lot of tips on these engines. Kind of thought the Fram was not the best idea for a filter. At least I can take it back. Seems the Valvoline Blue oil may be the way to go.

Look for it at Flying J (during March). I picked up 12 gallons at $6.00 /gallon.

I use Valvoline premium blue and have been very happy. I have a FS2500 OIl filter and that is the best investment I have made for my truck. After the filter was installed I ran the oil 5,000 miles and sent a sample off to lab. Oil sample was fine, ran oil 5K more sent off to lab, oil was fine. At 20000 miles the lab report said my oil was fine with no issues. I quit there. I run my oil
20K between changes. The $500.00 filter has saved me a lot of money. I still do oil samples on a routine basis, but no issues have been detected.
I change my spin on filter once a year for grins and giggles.

For my Cummins it only likes Amsoil 15W-40 with Amsoil bypass along with Fleetguard. Now for your Cummings? I don't know. Its okay you'll get used to saying it right one day. You must be a D-Max or PSD convert. Welcome to this great site.

Big amsoil fan.... But you needs to put a few more miles on your truck first..

If it were my truck I would use Delo 400 with stratapore or amsoil filters, change every 3K, then Amsoil at 13-15K.

Lets see....I have used valvoline, rotella, amsoil, mobil, lucas, and a few more I cant think of. After 938,000 miles combined I have had no oil related failures or problems. Use what you like, just change it when your supposed to and all will be fine.

I say use whatever you want. I prefer Mobil 1, but it's more expensive and I can't usually find it. That's why I went to Rotella, because I can get it anywhere and it's good enough.
