Thumbs down Mobil 1

I have been hearing alot of valvetrain noise. I thought I needed to adjust the valves, but that wasn't the problem at all!!! I went to wal-mart to get oil , but they didn't have the Mobil 1 turbo diesel so I got some Rotella syn. and low and behold I have to listen close to hear the valvetrain as I'm going down the road now. The mobil 1 had 5180 mi. on it at the time. Has any one else had this problem with the Mobil 1 ? I am sure I will never buy it agin!!!

I have a hard time buying into this concept.

Mobil 1 is known for being on the thin side of their respective viscosity range.

Could be that Mobil 1 is on the thin side and Rotella is on the thick side. Maybe the thicker oil is masking some of the engine noise?

Yes it is possible for you to hear less engine noise from switching to a different oil. I know that when I changed from Rotella to a different brand of oil I had less engine noise with the new oil when compared to the old oil.

I'm not going to defend M1, as I no longer use it in any of my vehicles. It used to be my oil of choice, but when they changed their recipe a few years back, I failed to see a benefit to using their oil at 3X the price of regular oils. When I need a good quality syn, I go Redline or RP.

But see if the same noises come back to your valvetrain after 5K miles. Your oil may have been diluted, or just broken down.

Is your mileage different after the oil change?

Rotella is a thicker oil which will make your valvetrain quieter. Like said above run the oil for the same mileage and see if its as loud. Oil should not break down unless overheated.
