i just bought a 06 2500 and it has a rough idle and a popping sound in the air cleaner box any ideas thanks for any help other than that the truck runs good and gets good fuel mileage

 

Need some more info: Mileage, any aftermarket pieces/parts, auto or manual? You can complete this info in the signature portion of the "User CP" so you won't have to add it every time.

Also, does the rough idle happen when warm or when cold? First start of the day or anytime? If you feather the fuel pedal, does it smooth out?

 

no aftermarket equipment, truck is automatic, 230k and it idles rough at all times do not feel it after idle

 

Any codes at all? Has it done this since you bought it? Does it feel like you are lacking power?

There is a lot of knowledge around here willing to help, but the more info the better.

 

First step is to eliminate the easy stuff. Replace the fuel filter, check that the air filter is good, additive in the fuel (I like the Power Services grey bottle for daily use and the Redline Diesel Plus for cleaning), and make sure the lift pump is working. The '06 has a lift pump in the fuel tank, and they don't normally fail, but 200K+ miles can take a toll on anything. When you crank the key to run, you should hear the liftpump whirring away for about 20 seconds or so...

Also: Any white or grey smoke? Is the oil thin or does it smell like diesel?

 

if that was a gas engine, i would say a bad intake valve, but i don't know if a diesel would do the same

 

i was thinking intake valve but have not had time to do any checking, truck has plenty of power and no other problems except the slight miss at idle and the noise coming from intake air tube

 

My 03 auto started doing that a few years ago. I tried 2 cycle oil and additives and it would run fine for a while. by searching the forums I found some have had problems with the Fuel Control Actuator (FCA) sticking. I found a new one on ebay for less then $100. It took 10 minutes to replace and the truck hasent missed a beat since.
