Max Boost?

What is max boost on a 2003 HO 6 speed with the stock brass elbow in the turbo compressor?

Around 20lbs? Maybe 30? I think the stock turbo is wastegated around what, 25lbs boost? Someone correct me if I am wrong. I know you can safely hit 50lbs boost without blowing the head gasket, but not with a stock turbo.

Why do you ask? Is it the EdgeEZ? I ran mine on the 4 setting for many miles stock with no problems. If you still have the Edge boost elbow, install it. It made a difference in performance, not allot, but noticable. It lets the turbo spool a bit longer, but nothing to the point of doing any turbo damage.

The highest I have seen with my '03 HO is 26lbs.

Before my Banks big head install, w/ sixgun only I saw 27-28 lbs. I now see 30-31, and I'm thinking about the aftermarket elbows to adjust for more boost, anyone else already try this??

tcr,

You might want to upgrade the turbo. The 03 factory turbos are stout, but not really designed for much more then 30lbs of boost. Shrapnel s-cks, quite a few guys have had this expierience by over powering the 03 turbos. Take a look at the BD-Power Super "B" Turbo. There are quite a few of us running them, with very good results. 40+ lbs is real easy to hit, and egt's are low. Pretty much a bolt on unit, costs around $1000 - $1100, shop around. And take a look at the ATS manifold while you are at it, you'll want one.

May as well do it right.

Just my .02

Here's a follow-up question. Should I get the 30 or 60 PSIG guage for a stock setup?

tcr,

I like the lift, but would go with a 4 inch now. I like the 4 inch look better over the 6 inch. But, I do get many compliments, thank you for the flowers! Interested in a slightly used 6 inch lift?

fredbert,

The 30 lb gauge is said to be a bit more accurate the the 60. But, I would still go with a 60lb gauge, seeing as 30 is right there at the top for our trucks. And if something breaks loose on the turbo side, you might catch it before any damamge is done easier with the 60. Also, it's one less part to buy if you start bombing the truck.

The reason I posted this question is that the dealer had my rig in for numerous problems (none of which got fixed...."can't duplicate"). Anyhow, the tect wrote on the card that under WOT conditions he saw 38 psi with the stock brass valve in the compressor housing. I purposly took out the Edge elbow so as to avoid a pissing contest with them as to why it was there. The service manger told me that the over boost condition was a result of hauling water in the bed...too much load??? Ya see, STAR wouldn't release a turbo to the local dealer becuase no one there was Cummins certified. So I took it to a "5 star" delaer so they could do the swap. STAR told the first dealer that the overboost condition was due to the WG rod sticking. Evidently STAR is aware that carbon and soot builds up in the WG and will eventually cause it to stick at some point. Mine happened to be stuck abotu wide open which was causing the truck to run like crap beause it had too much boost when it didn't need it. STAR told the dealer to break it free with WD40 and work it back and forth untill it was free....what a bad aid solution! The first dealer told me that they ran every test STAR wanted and that STAR would release a turbo once the truck was at a dealer with certified techs.....NOT! Then I get a call 3 days later from the manager telling me that STAR was voiding my warranty becuase I cut the cat off my 2003 (non-california) truck....what a joke! I told the manager that the 2003's not destined for cali are not equipted with a cat....he would'n here anything I had to say. I then told him I would bring in the section of pipe and muffler that I saved to prove that there was no cat.....nothing. Then after pissing with him for 30 minutes he said he would investigate the matter and get back with me. The next day I get a call from him telling me that he and STAR were wrong and that my warranty was reinstated. I've NEVER had so many problems with any other manufacturer!! The they were breaking my ***** for having a BHAF....."you modified your intake"....yea, so what I asked! I told him that the POS intake/filter assembly it came with was junk, and that I'm actually doing the truck a favor by dropping the EGT's with a more efficient filter....he didn't want to here that either. So anyhow, the warranty is back in place and nothing was done to my truck for 3 days. Oh, BTW, the diesel fuel that is puddling around the injectors on the head is normal according to the manager....hmmm, where do they get these guys?

Turbo,

My God! What a bunch of ***** you are dealing with! Hauling water in the bed? A cat on a non-CA 03? And the BHAF, eeegaads! You need to find another dealer, or a good diesel shop. Even compared to a gasser, the Cummins is so easy to work on. Sounds like these guys are just plain lazy, don't give a hoot, just make sure I get paid on friday. Heck, I roll into my dealer, and the first thing I get asked is "what have you done to it now?" They get a kick out of all of the stuff on there, and still warranty most of the truck.

As far as the fuel on the head, sounds like a loose injector line, a 1 hour fix tops. A 10mm socket/ratchet, a 5/8ths (crow foot or stubby) wrench and a torque wrench (36ftlbs If I remember correctly?) is all that is needed to do the fix. I would give Cummins a call, and see if they could be of any assistance to you. Someone needs to drop a line to this "5 Star Dealer".

My buddy took his truck to the dealer here in simi valley for a misfire.

The service manager is standing there hearing it pop and fart.........his reply......"that's normal Idle fluctuation" When it started up, BIG cloud of white smoke also.

..........oh and btw...according to him..........."diesel's can't misfire".

This is the freaking Service Manager!!!

Took it up to Bullhead Arizona, (mine died there about a month before), took the tech there 5 min top, for that his truck had a bad #6 injector.

So now.....I have to drive 345mile each way from Los Angeles to Bullhead City Arizona to get my truck fixed..............or if its minor enough, just fix it myself.

That's why I say.........mod it, forget about it, enjoy it!

Is it necessary to use the Edge brass elbow when running on setting #4 with a BHAF and 4" straight piped exhaust? I sent my old EZ box back to Edge to have it checked because the truck was acting odd. Edge sent me a new 3.1 version box at no cost....mine must have been bad. The only thing that sucks was that the old box had levels #5 and #6....they were fun but prolly the cause of my leaking O rings and other things. At least now there is no option to crank it up to the other two levels. Truck seems to run better with the stock elbow in place??? Could this be because the motor is getting more fuel and less air then when being run with Edge's elbow? Maybe the other elbow makes too much air and makes the EGT too low??? For whatever reason the dealer said on a road test my turbo was making 32.8 psi at WOT....that seems a bit high to me.
