I bought a 2003, 2500, 4x4, auto, standard output. When I bought the truck it was in the mechanic shop, and not running. The mech said it had bad injectors, and a bad ECM. I took the truck and put 6 new injectors in it. The mechanic had already put a new ECM in the truck. After I installed the injectors, and started the truck it would idle, but the throttle didn't work. Everything works, but there is no throttle it just idles. I hooked it up to a obdII and got lots of codes (don't remember what they were), but they mostly lead to apps. I replaced apps and still nothing. Then I took the ECM off and its original date of manufacture is in 2004 from cummins. The engine number on the ECM does not match my engine. I went and talked to a technician at my local dealership and he said without the original ECM my truck will never run again. Is this true or can I get a ECM from an identical truck to work, or is there a different problem.

I think they may be vin specific one may need to be programmed for your truck not real sure if you can just swap another one in there would like to know too. Here is a link on evil bay for remanufactured ecm vin programmed

Yep, the ECM needs to be programmed to your specific vehicle, and the VIN is needed to do that.

Sounds like someone swapped a different engine into that truck.

 

You must have got that truck for a honey of a price. If its too good to be true, it probably is. Sorry dude.

 

i bought the truck from my buddy and it does not have a different engine. also it is a 4door, 4x4, short bed, auto, leather, heated seats, loaded, replacement bumpers front and rear, 315 tires, and i only payed $2500. so if all else fails it will get a p pump and run.

 

bring it to dealer have them reflash the ecm like mikeyb said....and the mech u bought the truck from didn't know this ?

 

You problem may have to do with ECM, PCM, and security system. They are a PIA. Dealer with Starscan is probablly your only hope. At the price you paid, have plenty of "value" breathing room to bite the bullet on components. Make sure he is Starscan trained and knows his stuff. Sounds like you have two orginal computers which should be adequate for programing.

 

If all that is needed is the VIN programmed, give Bob Wagner a call. I swapped ECM's in my truck and he had Marco write me a program for a Smarty to load into my ECM. It worked great and I also got a nice power enhancer out of the deal.
