Big paper clip

I straightened out a big paper clip and it went in. So that must be it.
It went in almost a inch !
so my needle from NAPA must be too large.
Drill bit is looking better. Grrrrrrrrr.

Success !

Well:The Needles are too big from NAPA. I had my brother pick one up for me at O'Rielleys auto parts and that needle went in the fitting first time, pretty as you please. No drill bits!

Its a good thing. Its hot/humid and I was aggravated at something supposedly easy. If the spray tube off a can of WD-40 had fit in that fitting, I was going to spray it full! (The red tube didn't fit)

So the needle inserted, three squeezes on the grease gun and all done. It popped a little grease out when I pulled the needle out

whew, glad thats done, only 4 hours !

I can't find mine. Does it help to remove the cross-member/skid guard underneath the joint?

No, you don't have to. I have a flex hose on my grease gun though. In the pics on this thread, the little nubbin-fitting was shown facing towards the inside of the truck. Mine had stopped facing not straight down but about a 4 o'clock position toward the outside frame rail.
I used a paper towel with a little mineral spirits with a small stick to clean the area where the fitting is. Its shiny once its clean.
I painted white on the outside joint-shaft to find it next time. Its there, mines an 05 and it had it.
Do you have your front wheels up off the ground so you can spin the shaft?
I was lucky it showed where it did or I would have had to jack the truck up to spin the shaft around.
You will find it, have a good flashlight.

Let us know how it goes
Thanks
Biscuit

This may be a stupid question, but how much grease do you put in there? I gave it 4 pumps and didn't see any coming from anywhere but was afraid of over doing it.

I had to pump mine like 10 times when I hit 40k. I looked forever before I finally found it. Just keep an eye out around the seals when you start pumping, once grease comes out your good. If the grease is dark, keep pumping until you see clean grease come out.

Aftr that what I did was tape some wax paper all around my drive shaft and drove it that way for a week or so. This allows you keep the grease from slinging all over the truck.

Thanks, I pumped about 23 times and finally started to see some grease. I've only got 24000 miles on my truck. Anyways, thanks for the info.

There is no doutbt that this is a really bad design Putting the stupid " fish eye" in there must cost more than a regular zerk. Dodge designers must be a bunch of sadists, however after reading many treads and all the posts on the subject over several years I cannot recall reading anything about a modification to a zerk fitting being installed. I know its really tight and I have bent many kneedles since 2006. I have tried the pointed adapters to no avail just cannot get them lined up straight enough to get any grease in the fitting..
Now I am done ranting,my question is has anyboby installed a regular zerk and done away with the fish eye fitting??

It's taken me 5 years of owning the truck to find it quickly now...And one of the only reasons its easier now is my free spin kit. What a silly thing for Dodge to do.
If greasing it, you will see grease start to come out the back of the Cardan joint...plus you should hear it.

I just want to say thanks to the person who started this thread. I have never been able to find this fitting until today. 102,000 miles...Hmmm I think I was in need of some grease. Wow, I think I even got 5 more HP after getting grease into that thing. Thanks to all who offered the great advice!!

I painted an arrow on my driveshaft to make it easier to find. Make sure you clean the dirt off with a Q tip before greasing it. It is almost impossible to see when it is dirty.
I think most people have a hard time finding it because they think the grease fitting is on the side of the cross of u joint where you normaly find them. This fitting is behind the cross and well down near the center of the cardan. I don't think you could put a regular grease fitting into this confined space. Even if you managed to scew one in, the end of your grease gun would not fit in there and you would end up using an needle adapter anyway.

a regular zerk fitting will not fit---therefore the "fisheye"---not that hard to do w/needle adapter on flex hose and wifie holding bright flashlite and good luck w/wifie holding lite
