Lost oil pressure blew turbo
Lost oil pressure blew turbo
So yeah 5.9 Cummings I lost oil pressure and blew the turbo. We are not sure how but the engine seems fine. Everyone tells me the oil pump is probably not the problem..there is no oil at the filter this was checked. Any help?
Within weeks of buying the truck, you lost oil pressure? What was oil condition at time of purchase?
How long between no pressure and losing turbo? Or maybe the turbo was the cause, and it blew out the oil?
Are there any signs of leaks or where the oil went?
Possible bad-faith sale of a truck ready to blow?
Cummins, not Cummings.
Very glad to hear it, but curious how you know engine is fine. Put oil back in and it runs, sans turbo?
The current oil filter has no label? What color is it?

I didn't even look I just called the tow truck and mechanic told me it has no oil preasure.. he said he put a new filter on and ran it ..no oil in the new filter...I'm wondering if it could be the sending unit or would the pump be more likely? He also said the no pressure caused the turbo to go. I'm not a diesel mechanic in no way shape or form but I would like to know if anyone had this problem
Sending unit wont cause a no oil pressure condition. Loss of oil pump, oil pump pickup tube cracked, broken or plugged. Yes, no oil pressure will kill a turbo fast as well as the rest of the internals in the engine. Any way you look at it, the pan must be removed and I would definitely have an oil analysis done to make sure nothing else may have been hurt.

What were the symptoms that something was wrong? Were you driving and suddenly something happened, or did this 'something' happen over a few days? Where there any unusual noises? Did the oil pressure light come on and if so, how soon after that did you turn off the engine? How do you know for sure that the turbo is shot? Ask your mechanic to tell you how he knows.
I agree with saggonwaggon91.
Was this a private deal or do you have any recourse with the seller? Maybe before pulling the pan, consider all your recourse options.

Ok so got my truck back.... the shaft in the oil pump broke off and that caused oil to stop going to the turbo . The guy I bought the truck from fixed everything! For free! Thank you guys for the advice!
Make sure you use a Cummins Fleetguard or Mopar oil filter. Don't use one of those cheapy Fram, Quaker State or similar filters from the local, quickie oil change shops. A Napa Gold/Wix filter should be OK, too. My local Cummins shop sees a lot of issues with non-stock oil filters failing.
Good luck with the truck.
