Looking for the skinny on the '06 diff's

Hi all. I'm trying to find out some information on the rear differential in my truck. I have an '06 Megacab, 4x4, Auto w/ 5.9er. I am not the original owner and I don't have the build sheet. Can anyone out there in Ramland tell me if the LSD was a standard feature or an option. If an option can I tell from my VIN if it has the optional LSD or not ????? Now the bigee, If I do not have the LSD who makes the best aftermarket unit available to us. I like the Eaton but I could only find one for the Jeeps, GM's and Fords. Do they make one for the Ram's ???

Thanks all,

PS: I thought I posted this earlier today but can't seem to find it. Not sure if I deleted it prior to posting or if it ended up somewhere else. Sorry if it's a duplicate posting.

The LSD is an option if you took your Vin # to a dealer they could get you a build sheet of what it came with from the factory.

As hea said it's an extra cost option. Why you would you build a 4x4 w/o one, I don't know. But there are a lot of them out there.

Anyway, you can find out. Jack up the rear end, put the trans in neutral, and spin one tire by hand, and see what direction the other tire spins. It will either spin in the same direction, or the opposite direction.

I can't remember exactly which is which, though. I think an LSD spins in the opposite direction.

Also, you can go to the Dodge customer service web site, search around for the right page, and send them your VIN. In a few days, they'll send back your build sheet. I think I got mine back in 3-4 days.

It took about three weeks to get a build sheet but here is what mine came with:
DHAP Lock-Up Torque Converter
DH3S Elec Shift-on-the-Fly Transfer Case
DJQS 5,200# Front Axle AAM 9.25
DMES 3.73 Rear Axle Ratio
DRQS 11.50 Rear Axle

Don't know if that will help.

An LSD with clutches will have both wheels spin the same direction. However, the Dodge torsen style LSD has worm gears, not clutches, so it the wheels will spin in opposite directions, like an open diff. An open differential has a 50:50 torque split between the two wheels, the Torsen can handle up to a 3:1 split before the wheels will spin at different rates.

Put one wheel on hard dirt on the shoulder of the road, and the other on the pavement. Stomp on the accelerator and if you light up the tire on the pavement as well as the one on the dirt you have the LSD.

The specs on your axle is stamped on the right side housing. Look toward the top line of the housing and you will see it.
