Lifting my truck... got questions
Lifting my truck... got questions
Ok guys so I have a 06 Ram 2500 Big Horn 4x4. I want to lift my truck but I don't have the slightest clue about it. I dont want anything for going muddin or offroading really. Just want a nice lift with some bigger tires and wheels for the looks. I will be going off road to like the deer lease and stuff but not bajaing, so I dont need some super suspension.
What lifts are good for your all around use. mostly road driving. I know it will loose some milage and will not ride as good as stock but I dont want anything that feels like I welded the thing solid either. any tips on what to look for please let me know.

i have a 6" tuff country in mine. i think i have about $1100 or $1200 into it. thats with the good shocks. It was CAKE to put in. i have put in 2 of them now. I only had to drill 1 hole. took about 6 or 7 hours, with no air tools. the second one took even less cause we had air tools.
I am in Japan right now so my wife is trying to get it done for me before I get home. How much is too much to pay for it to get installed? Is there a place that I should be looking to buy from online or do you guys buy local?
I put Fabtech lifts in both Dodges and paid just under $1000.00 for each. It's relatively easy to install especially if you compare it to the 94 Chevy I lifted with an independent front axle. I think it took me a day to do it. A good mechanic with a lift and all the right tools and a shop should be able to knock it out in 5 or 6 hours maybe less. I would imagine if you have a 4x4 shop near you they might be less on the labor if you are buying the kit from them plus their experience in installing lifts will make them faster at the install.
Carli starter kit.
Go with a Carli starter kit. It's a mild 2-3" lift that leaves your suspension within Dodge's stock geometry. It'll have a great ride and should fit your bill. Great aftermarket support and authorized distributors/installers in many areas. No drilling or welding necessary. www.thecarlisuspensioncom. located in Orange,Ca. Your truck can be restored to stock if you desire. No permanent change.

sky jacker makes a good system. but my question is if your not wheeling and just want a better look and bigger tires why dont you level it and just do a 1 inch body lift? wouldnt that be way cheaper and still look ok. what size tires did you want to run?

Superlift with bilstein 5100's
I have the 6 inch and so far so good. But you NEED the bilsteins...the superlift shocks that come with it are junk. I paid 2300. for the ligt with the install ( thats with tax) and also a tc drop since I have a megacab. But I think the lift itself was 1650. I got it all done just after I bought my truck in 07. Since the prices have dropped some...
Just keep in mind if you are on a budget, your tires alone will cost what the lift will, if you get a good quality tire that is...
Oh and I went with Superlift because some big Dodge dealers in Western Canada sell lifted trucks off the lot and only use Superlift...say its the most custom lift...made for Dodge.

my friend has a factory superlift on his cummins and the drop pitman arm cracked in half at the steering box. there was actually a recall on them, they were not properly heat treated. but the problem has been fixed
Is there any specific peice that I should opt to get if it isn't included in the kit? Something for steering, bump stops, or other little things that are commonly overlooked by beginners?
Once lifted, what is required to re-calibrate the speedometer? Also does it throw off the mileage on the digital readout when you lift the truck?
I want to run 37's so a body or leveling kit isnt going to work. I am going to buy quality hardware, I just know that as with most toy's, when you ask for info you tend to get pointed at the most extreme gear out there because it's rated "the best" when in actuallity I just need function for what I will be doing. Like I said in my first post, I am not going to be mudding or bajaing my truck. If it goes off road it will be at the deer lease or at my parents farm. So I don't need King shocks with all the gadets. I just want something that looks nice, won't break or damage my truck, that can handle occasional light offroading and highway use.

A steering stablizer is a good idea. You need to have the dealer recalibrate the comp after. Im off about 15k at highway speeds ( it marks slower) and about 5k at lower speeds. But oddly my mileage isnt really off. They did attempt to calibrate with no luck as far the speedo speeds. But I do notice the tranmission shift points seem off. Something I will correct when I get a programmer. It shifts a bit too late, seems to rev a bit.
You are going to need to change your rims..if you get a 37' tire thats wider than 12.5 It will rub on your control arms ( on stock rims) . But if you get rims that have too much backspacing they will rub on your fenders. My rims are 4.75 and once they were on with the tires ( 37x 13.5x17) I had to cut a good 6-8 inches off the corners...
4x4 shop thought I was crazy to be cutting a brand new truck...but damage dont, tires were on lolAnyway, I highly recommend Superlift, Toyo Open Country MT's and bilstein. I have been very happy with it.
No it's not a megacab. just the quad cab. Recalibrating the comp doesnt adjust the speedo right? that is a gear in the rear end?
I plan on getting tires and rims. The stock rims are kind of an odd size if you want to go larger.
