lift pump question

question - what exactly does lift pump do??
what i believe it does is lift fuel from tank. does this lp always work, or is it in use only when starting truck??

here is my problem - i have 225000km on truck. no guages. truck drives fine, seems to have awesome power. recently when i have started my truck it cranks for up to 7 secs befor start. then it'll be fine for 2 or 3 starts, than 7 secs for next few starts. truck runs fine after started.
so is my lift pump on the way out??
what else would cause long cranking befor start??

i know i should change out lp regardless if it is the problem, but i am currently working 12 hr days plus 4 hr driving. so i need to wait for a day off, in like 11 more days. do i need to buy a lp and just wait for this one to die when i am out in the field, or do i have another problem. if it dies and i am away from any town, what do i need to know after i change it out. crack injector, etc?

thanks in advance for any help or answers.
