Lift pump leaking

I swapped out my canister mounted lift pump and now it is spraying fuel between it and the canister, I did not see an o ring or gasket when i took old one off. should there be one?

Yes! There is a black o-ring that creates a seal. You may find the old one in the canister inlet / orifice or the old pump. However, a new pump typically comes with a new one, unless you are replacing it with an old pump.
