Is this leak normal?

Is this leak normal?

Yesterday while checking my oil level I noticed what looked and felt like oil where the valve cover meets the rest of the motor. As far as I can tell, it doesn't look like it happened overnight, but mabey over 2 weeks since I popped the hood last.

Is this normal, remember I'm a newbie. On a gas vehicle this wood be considered bad, right?

Thanks for any input on this.

No leak is normal and being that they are sometimes hard to determine where they are coming from I would take it back to the dealer and have them make note of it. Its under warrenty.

Took'er by the dealer today, diesel mechanic said it was more like seeping than a "leak". He put a dye in the oil and said to bring it back in a couple of weeks. I asked him the point of the dye and he told me under black light you can see a yellow glow if it's leaking (seeping). He said the dye test has to be positive in order to justify warranty work and to order the parts from cummins. So even though the mechanic saw the oil "seepage" all the way around the valve cover.. he's still not going to do anything until there is a yellow glow under black light.

anyone care to ease my mind on this or should I have spent all my money on becoming a lawyer!!!!!!!

If you do a search on "oil leak" in this forum, you'll see a couple of people have had the same problem. In most cases the gasket was not seated correctly when they installed the cylinder head cover. There is a rubber reuseable gasket that fits in a groove on the cylinder head cover(aka valve cover). It may have been pinched or not torqued correctly when it was installed.

Notes from FSM:
"REMOVAL—CYLINDER HEAD COVER
(1) Disconnect both battery negative cables.
(2) Remove oil fill cap.
(3) Remove the breather cover.
(4) Disconnect the breather hose and breather
drain tube from the breather housing.
(5) Remove cylinder head cover bolts.
(6) Remove the cylinder head cover.


INSTALLATION—CYLINDER HEAD COVER
(1) Inspect cylinder head cover gasket for cuts and
proper installation in groove. Replace if damaged.
(2) Position cylinder cover on top of rocker housing.
(3) Install bolts.
(4) Starting with the center bolt, torque to 24 N·m
(18 ft. lbs.).
(5) Install breather hose to breather.
(6) Install breather drain hose to breather.
(7) Install breather cover and wire harness clip.
Torque to 24 N·m (18 ft. lbs.)."
