Injecter Noise?
Idle time is anything below 1000 rpm +- so that adds up to higher idle time. So going down hills, slowing to stop, etc. it all adds up. But try to argue that and no way, at least in my case. Need to install a tachograph on it to prove the point but that would probably void warranty.
tick, tick.........
Well, I am glad to hear that there are others out there having the same problem as I am. I think it is total bs to have any sort of tick in these engines. My number six injector was replaced and this seemed to make the tick, or knock rather, worse. I think it is a wrist pin or possibly a rocker/lifter. That is the best way to describe what I hear. My dealership has been really on top of this and have gone the extra mile as far as I am concerned. However, the condensending, cavilier attitude I get when I talk to the people at DC customer satisfaction just floors me. I have never been so put off by a company in my life! I wish star/tech or whatever it is called would just let the mechanics do their job! The dealer has had the same results with the tech guys and isn't too happy about the situation. I am starting to think that there could be some underlying design flaws that are just now showing up and it is quite possible that DC is trying to cover their a$$. I would love to hear other opinion's on this.
Well I have never been a fan of DC and this just put the nail in the coffin. I may be headed back to GM camp. I want a real crew cab and someone that will honor the warrenty. I will start reserching heavaly tomarrow and make shure before I unload this dumb thing. I may even consider going back to a gasser, but if I do it will definatly be a GM NOT a Dodge. The one and only reason I drive a Dodge is for whats under the hood of this truck and it is what is currently causing my greif. I wanted desent milage so I avaioded the GM 6.0 gasser and I am now getting real comparable milage to one with a $5000 more expensive engine option.
I wanted the cummins but got a steal of a deal when I bought my 03 2500HD. Reg cab long bed 6L 5spd 4X4 with 4.10s. It got 14.4 empty on all but 2 tanks of fuel. I traded it at 15,000 miles because it was a POS!! I am a chevy fan through and through but never again will I buy a late mode GM. Cant use the tail gate as the straps break. About ran it through the shop at work because of the break failure that only took GM 3 times to get fixed on recall. Cant forget the CSK (cold knock syndrome) that all LS1 engine sizes are having. Sounds like forged pistons in a loose bore rocking around. Dont forget about all the tranny problems that the trucks are having burning up auto transmissions. Or my favorite was the computer program that cut power when it thought the cat was getting to hot. Nothing like turning 2500RPMs and the motor wont hold a steady speed on a 2 or 3 degree gradewhile towing a 5000LB load !I test drove a DMax and it never left the lot. Tranny shifted like crap along with way to high of a first gear and now power under the hood. The thing idled through the lot at 15MPH in first!!! What clutch would you have left if you ever hooked it to a trailer?
I think that all manufacturers are a pain to deal with. See it through and get the cummins fixed right. You will be much happier in the end. I know that I am. Especially when I cruise with an easy foot at 60 MPH and knock out 23.5 MPG with an average at 18 around town. Its up to you but I have been there and done that.

I bet they all tick. Maybe not when they are brand new, but after they are broken in.
I also find it hard to believe that the tick is as loud as a 2nd gen.
The Cummins uses solid lifters instead of hydraulic. Cummins does this in order to keep the exhaust brake capability. That's why you're not supposed to run an exhaust brake on a Duramax or a Powerstroke. The backpressure on the valves crushes the hydraulic lifters and decreases the braking peformance. That's why its not very common to see a PAC brake on a PS or DMax.
I'd keep my solid lifters with a Jake brake over hydraulic lifters with service brakes only anyday.

I went out and started mine after sitting for about 12 hours. Could'nt here the famous ticking noise at first. Let it idle for about 5 minutes, drove about 2 miles, left it idling. when I got out I could here the tick. Raised the hood and put my hand on the fuel lines to each injecter. I could feel a hit on the #1 injecter only. The hit I was feeling did'nt seem in time with the ticking I was hearing. Could this be a lifter as discussed in the earlier post? The ticking seems to be somewhat erratic and not in perfect time. This does'nt ever get to a knocking or pinging sound as some have said.

Has anybody checked their fule milage? has it gone down. My buddy has this problem and when he lugs his truck it starts this knock but other than that it don't do it. His also loses fule milage.

I can't complain about my fuel mileage. I started out around 12-13 intown and 16-17 hiway. Now with 9500 on the clock, it's 15.5-16.5 town and 19.5-20.5 hiway running 70 to 73 mph. I'm getting 112.5-13.5 towing my 5er. I tow 60-65 mph.
I talked to the mechanic today and he said he pulled and cleaned the injectors today and that helped a lot but did not totaly get rid of the noise. He said that I had more carbon builup in my engine with 14000 miles on it than most he puls apart with over 200,000 miles on them. He said I need to get it out and pull something heavy a long long ways, then continue to tow with it as often as possible. So I guess I need to work it more. He said hook onto 20,000lbs and tow it to Denver and back. So does anyone need somehting towed to Denver and back???
Part of our DIESEL TUNE UP was to take them out on a test drive and mash them HARD.You would not believe how much soot and smoke came out of some. The auto trans trucks were the worst. Some took mashing to redline several times. They ran smoother and better. Some techs when adding a qt.can of fuel condentioner to them and servicing fuel filter added part of the can to the fuel filter housing and quickly pulled them out on start up and mashed them hard. These were mech.pump trucks.Made a BIG differance in how they ran.
