Idleing up

Both of my 06 dodges idle up when it is cold. To 1000 rpms. I read that some peoples do it when the crusie control is on. Both of mine do it with the crusie off. So what is causing this?

The trucks with automatic trannys can have the High Idle Feature enabled that allows you to raise the idle with the cruise control buttons. It can be raised anytime regardless of temp. As far as I know all 3rd gens idle up when the weather is cold and left idling to help with warmup. They do it automatically and they come programmed that way.

If you have the idle up feature, you can turn the cruise on, hit set, and the RPM's will jump to 1100. You can then his accel or coast, and it will go up or down, 1100/1500-ish rpms. When it is below a certain temp, and the truck is at idle, the computer will idle it up to 1K on it's own. Something about air intake temps, I think.

I seem to remember that if the ambient temp is below 32F, at idle, the engine will speed up to around 1000 rpm. Has nothing to do with whether or not the cruise control high idle feature is enabled.

Yes, there are two high idle modes. One is automatic. When it is cold, the engine will idle up to 1000 RPM.

The other is when high idle via the cruise control is enabled. With the vehicle in park or neutral, press the cruise on and then press set. The engine will idle up to 1100 RPM and using the accel/decel, the RPM can be adjusted between 1100 and 1500 RPM. If you touch the brake, the high idle cancels. If the vehicle starts to roll, the high idle cancels (that's why I set the parking brake when I idle in neutral--really more to keep from rolling ).

Manual transmission setups need to install a clutch switch kit, or just jumper two pins on the ECM.

The nice thing about high idle via the cruise control is that the Jacobs brake is still activated at 1100 RPM, so it warms up pretty quick. If I use the accel to raise the RPM, the Jacobs brake deactivates.

You will likely have to have the dealer enable the high idle feature (the one controlled by the cruse controls). Took my dealer 10 min, and they didn't charge anything to enable it. There are several options you can have them enable (daytime driving lights, etc.) . . . this is just one of them. It can be set between normal idle; 750rpms up to 1500rpms max. It's pretty cool

We only need to ground one pin. But all the same.

Yeah, my bad. I didn't take the time to do a search.

It is one pin for the manual. ECM pin #22. Here's the best thread I found on it:

Manual Trans high idle

It seems a little silly to me since I think there's already a clutch switch for starting... Oh well.

thats a good linky to the thread. Only problem wtih the existing clutch switch is it does exactly the opposite of what you need it to. normally open until its pushed in...the high idle needs to be normally closed until pushed.

Hmm. If it was a dual pole-dual throw switch, you could wire to the opposite side. Then it could possibly work for both functions...
