I can't believe my milage

After getting no better mpg than 16-17 on the freeway at 65-70 mph. I put 30+ gallons of fuel in the other day. (We must be getting summer blend now) I drove 125+ miles and filled up,(it took 5.5 gallons) I checked the mpg and I could not believe my eyes. It was 22+ mpg. Here is what I have done to my 06 4x4 qc lb with 3750 miles. I put my quad on the 100hp setting, put amsoil drop in air filter, cut 4 inch hole in bottom of air box w/dryer vent hose running out side, have 285-18 tires inflated to 50 psi front, 40 psi rear, silencer ring is gone, add 11 ounces of power service "kleen" to this tank full. I don't know if this is a fluke or what the hell. Alls I can say is WOW. By the way, I filled up at the same pump clear to the top both times. What is you guy's take on this?

your larger tires will definitley contribute to that number - your tire turns fewer times to cover the same distance as the stock 17's did - unless you had the ECM comp'd for it?

My take on it is that 125 miles is WAY too short of a distance to get an accurate calculation. It's almost impossible to really fill the tank to the same level each time. When you're talking about 5.5 gallons, a tiny difference in tank level after fillup can make a considerable difference in what the mileage calculation yields.

That said, I have no problem believing your truck can get mileage like that, and you may well have. It's just that 125 miles is an awfully short distance to calculate on.

I'd say you drove down a 125 mile long hill with a 40 mph tailwind and had a 3 gallon air pocket in the tank when you refilled to check it...

I have 26k on my 06 and get a solid 16 at 72-75 mph. The best I have gotten ever is 19.something on a 200 mile stretch of 55mph 2 lane road that I drive every now and then.

Not to disagree. But if I had larger tires. That meens that I would have had "less" miles on the odometer than I would have if I would stock tires on. That meens more miles with the stock tires on the odometer = even more mpg.

Fuel quality is the reason. Different stations/companies dilute the fuel. Buy fuel from P**** get 16.5 mpg,buy fuel from F***** * and get 19.5 mpg. I drive an 18 wheeler and see BIG differences in quality of fuel from station to station AND state to state. The same with gasoline. The cheapest ain't the best. Also each state/municipality can specify what is in the fuel (Kalifornia,Oregon, etc) to match whatever standards their EPA rep says is "good" for the air. Tires, tire pressure, aerodynamics of the vehicle, all play a part. The more wind resistance the less fuel mileage. My .02

Not to boast but over the last couple of months I've consistantly averaged 20-21mpg on every tank of fuel(hand calculated, although the overhead is pretty accurate). That said; I haven't towed anything recently and I rarely see speeds over 70mph(I live in and travel to work on small country roads). Over the winter and into spring, when I was towing more often I was typically averaging about 17-19mpg per tank of fuel.

This week I drove from Minneapolis to Chicago and got 22 hand calc. I was averaging 65 with a nice tailwind most of the way. By far the best I have ever seen. Overhead was showing 22.7. I think my truck is starting to get broken in @ 23k miles and pulling loads from 6k to 11k. I will have to compare it to the return trip on Friday.

When we tow from MN to UT our worst mileage of the trip, mountains included, is going west in Nebraska. Our best mileage of the trip is going east in Nebaska on the way home. Both Cummins and Dmax pullin goosenecks with two jeeps each.

I totally agree with the fuel QUALITY statement, I just lost over 2.0 mpg by saving .15 a gallon and being stupid and almost running it empty. Wally world fuel SUX, but atleast it's better than pushing it
