Who's overhauled their own truck engine?

Considering as an option, my friend has a shop with all the tools needs to do the job, (minus any specialty tools) both of us are mechanically inclined.

Would you tackle it? A local shop said about 40 hours, so I'm figuring about 100-120 hours for us to get the job done.

Any comments are appreciated.

Thanks again.

Bought mine with 200,000 on odom, at 208,000 three piston rings let go . Overhauled mine , took some time cause no time off from work but you should be able to get her done in about 4-5 days for a first timer.

I have done a few of the 12V engines. The problem with late 24V engines is that nobody makes a aftermarket kit for them , so your kinda stuck to buying from Cummins $$$$$ I haven't tryed to buy a kit for 03 and up for about 6 months, someone may have came out with a aftermarket kit. Cummins got me for almost 3000.00 when I did my 04, then machine work after that... Not to bad of a job if you have built engines before and are not in a hurry.

3G for what??? Bearings, rings, pistons, and seals?
I'm getting ready to do my first rebuild (due to the tappet cover gasket blowing out), but it's NOT going to cost me 3G's...

If you go with Cummins parts , it will be real close. Pistons for a set 875.00 , because the engine was dusted. Gasket set lower 150.00 . Gasket set upper with valve cover, almost 500.00 . Bearings mains, rods, cam 325.00 other misc. parts like hoses, belts, water pump, idler pully brg, brought the cost to almost 3000.00 Then Machine work. 1800.00 Oh, I forgot cam and lifters............The list go's on and on..........

That is for a 98.5-02, they do carry some CR gaskets. Enterprise Engine Performance is where I bought the kit for my 12v, it came with Mahle pistons.

Ah... Missed that! But it does say below that...

Please e:mail with your engine serial # for price/availability. We can typically get you a rebuild kit for almost any diesel engine !!! (In/Out of frame options also available)

So maybe they would or could put a kit together for an 03-07 5.9L in or around the same price range. It's one e-mail... it would be worth it to ask.

They have pretty much everything to rebuild the CR's. Here is a link, to the CR upper and lower kit, they only carry genuine Cummins gaskets for the CR's though.
