I have a 2007 5.9 2500 MegaCab with the 48RE transmission with no mods. I recently had a P1740 code. I reset it and all seems fine. The truck has about 78,000 miles. I changed the fluid around 40,000 and just recently. Both times I had about half a thimble full of wear on the magnet. No chunks.

Can anyone give me their opinion on whether that amount of wear is normal? What is the normal life time for these transmissions before rebuild? About 20,000 of those miles was towing at about 19,000 pounds total.

I have a long summer trip planned and don't want to get stranded. Just wondering if I should get the transmission rebuilt. I always expected to have to do it before 100,000 miles.

Mine's an 06 and I am pushing 260,000 miles on mine. I did have to replace the governor pressure sensor and solonoid (may be where your code is coming from)but other than that it has been great.

I think as long as you drive it right and not dog it all the time there should be no reason it wont last well over 100,000 miles.

Wow!! I had no idea they would last that long. I am seriously considering replacing the sensor and solenoid or at least having them on hand. As you said, some info indicates those can throw that code.

I have to agree with Dave although I have a manual my son's '05 48RE had a problem, the governor pressure sensor and solenoid was the fix. Apparently it's a common problem......

 

FYI there have been hotshot trucks that have reported going over 400K with only normal fluid and filter changes.

 

I have over 434,000 on mine.

I change the fluid and filter every 50,000 and run a full synthetic by Valvoline.

 

sorry to hijack your thread but what are the signs of a bad governor pressure sensor and solenoid?

Every once in a while my check engine light comes on (NO CODES) and my tranny shifts like its in tow/haul mode. then when it starts shifting correctly the light will go out the next day.

 

Gear hunting and some trans shutter. IF you have ot serviced and they tighten the bands make sure they know the differance between inch pounds and foot pounds. I found that didn't and look at my sig you'll see its not oem anymore. Oh made it to 64k. Take care of it right and it will take care of you.

 

Just make sure you do no mods to your engine if you want your 48re to last! Blew mine at 15,000. Barely got it off the lot!

 

I had 160,000 on mine before I rebuilt it. The governor pressure solenoid and sensor had gone bad and I drove/towed with it like that ignoring the problem for roughly 8,000 miles before I had it looked at (I just didn't have the money to fix it) The tranny shop said that those being bad jacked up the rest of the transmission (clutches, bands, etc. soft parts mostly, buit even with that they still weren't that bad) I think these tranny's are tougher than most give them credit for. Most of the early deaths for these things are behind engines that have been souped up a tad. If it isn't giving you problems, i wouldn't worry about it. Change out your solenoids (there is a write up on it on here somewhere) and enjoy your trip.

 

The symptoms were like quadman20 said! We were at the track talking to Clint Cannon a few years back and he told us of the problems with the two components. They were even having problems with them and had to go to another source.....

 

You guys are making me feel much better. How hard is it to change the two components? Also where is a good place to purchase them? There has to be a cheaper place than my dealer!!

Bobby you just need to get messy and drop the pan pull the old ones and put the new ones in and put it back together. Since Clint had already sifted though the unreliable ones we got them from him. By now I'm sure most of the Performance shops have a line on reliable ones, that's were I would go......

 

578,321 km give or take 10 km or so. then it will grenade

 

I have an 06 and the TQ went at 52,000. Towed a 7000 LB Toy Hauler a dozen times. I do not beat on it or have any mods. I think the Trannies suck in in my opinion. I ended up putting in an ATS Trans. The cost was 800 more than changing the TQ,Valve body and trans pump .I didn't want to take a chance doing the repairs and then having something else fail.
