How many miles before transmission failure??

Would like to know at what point I can expect transmission failure in an 05? I know there are many variables in such a question such as how often the transmission fluid is changed and how much or how heavy you tow. Clutches and bands have to wear out. The Cummins part seems to have the ability to go much longer than the transmission.
I've been researching my options on a rebuild and yesterday while talking to a very reputable privately owned garage owner he suggested just putting in a Jasper remanufactured transmission because of the three year 100K warranty good everywhere in the USA. For peace of mind in the next few years of heavy traveling across this beautiful nation I want to be pro-active in tow vehicle maintenance. Right now I have 107K miles on this truck with fluid changes every 35K or so.

I would just be interested in how many miles you have on your 3rd Gen truck with the 48RE and if you had transmission problems at what mileage???

I have 187,000 miles on my factory trans. I did put a torque converter in it around 140000 miles because it started slipping when locked up. I regularly tow my 35 foot fifth wheel and once in a while double tow with the ATVs behind camper. This year did almost 2500 miles.round trip like this.

Thanks for this reply. I thought this post would generate massive amounts of interest but apparently there is not a lot of failure on the 48RE so there is not much to complain about!! Could you share any maintenance items you have done on your transmission........band adjustment or fluid changes??

Stock skateboard wheels and power if you can stand it=trans longevity.

Fluid was changed with converter around 140000 miles. Other than that nothing. I have had a banks six gun on it for 5+ years but only in the last few months has it ever been turned up past the fuel mileage setting. Tires are 285s sense stockers wore out at 55000 miles. For what it's worth I have been trying to decide wether or not to trade for a newish one or start upgrading this one. If I keep it I will probably go ahead with a trans overhaul or swap it to a six speed( what I would rather do) nex near because the year after we plan to take a trip to Alaska for our 20th anaversary and I don't want it crapping out in midle of nowhere.

I have 242,000 on my stock trans. Tow 10,000 at least once a year, and gets the bed loaded to capacity every couple of months.

Trans

I have just short of 400k on mine, service every 75k, 3 band adjustments to date, fingers crossed and looking into a Allison 6 speed conversion when it quits, I pull an 18 ft flats boat, a 34 ft 5th wheel at 11k, and all stock and I have put all the miles on it.

I would like to know more about this Allison 6 speed conversion you mentioned!! Did not know something like this was available. Holy cow, with a Cummins engine and an Allison transmission Ford and GM are out of the picture forever.
