How Hard is it to change a belt on a 5.9?

I was thinking of changing out my belt on the 5.9 (07). Staring to squeek a little at shut down. Don't remember doing it before and I have a new belt ready to go... COuld use the OE for a spare. Is it a nightmare to do? Thanks!

The squeek at shut down is normal. I don't know how easy it is to change though.

They are a real pain to change, getting the belt behind the tensioner is the hard part.

Not something you want to change on the side of the road, if its questionable I would change it at home when you have a nice cold engine and a couple hours to kill. Make sure you start at the A/c compressor and tensioner first otherwise you cant get the belt on all the way.

I see you have an 07. How many miles are on it? Seems pretty new to need a new belt.

Anyway, there is a TSB to install an over run clutch on the alternator to stop chirp at shut down, which should be free if the truck is under warranty.

http://dodgeram.info/tsb/2006/09-001-06.htm

Changing a belt on one of these is not fun, but not too bad. The tensioner accepts a 1/2" square drive, and is easiest to release from the bottom. To get the belt on and off, it is probably easiest to do the water pump pulley first/last, which is easiest to get to from the top.

If you don't have someone to assist, you may be able to wedge a block of wood between the crank pulley and ratchet handle to hold the tensioner back.

What he said. It took 5 mins to get the belt routed correctly, and 20 mins to get it to go behind the tensioner. Not a lot of room in there..

I also found that having a second set of hands around made it easier.

Sounds like my dealer can do it when it needs it as they probably get to practice all the time! LOL

The chirp is normal a shut down. Its more noticable in the summertime because of the AC compressor. If you feel that is must be replaced its about a 6 pack job. A case if your Madhat but then again he could have it done in one beer. J/K Mad
