how does high idle work

hi guys....i have a december built automatic with the 305hp engine. How does the high idle feature mentioned in the owners manual work? it seem to hint to the fact that it is a function of temperature....that after awhile it will automatically change to a high idle if the engine is started cold and the accelerator is NOT touched....but the cold temp starting placard on the viser says to instantly take the truck up to 1000 rpm once the engine is running....which in my take is not leaving the accelerator alone????? then of course there is the take that the high idle feature is a function of the cruise control and has to be activated with the dealer HELP!!!!!

I think it is two separate functions. first one is a funtion of the outside temp if it is low enough for the auto high idle to kick in(not sure how low temp has to be). second is a manual high idle feature that needs to be enable by the dealer. it lets you set the idle high(between 1100 & 1500rpm) via using your cruise controls(turn on, set and adjust with res/acc button) works great. outside temp not a factor

Two totally separate things. The high idle feature in the engine kicks on below 20 or so I'm not sure of the actual temp either.

There was a tsb released later for fo lks complaining of 'poor cab heat' which is how the dealer will look it up. They reflash and enable (2 steps make sure they do both) the feature as described above by GreyTD - you can up your idle anytime when in park using the cruise control buttons. I have it enabled and it works well.

also does this apply to the 03 trucks? mine was built 1/17/03 if this matters...? i would love to have this feature on my truck. our international dump trucks at work have this and you have to set it at least 900 rpm all the time no matter if its 90* out or it will shut off after 5 mins...

I had to pay for the high idle to be enabled on my 2002 after I had purchased it. When I picked up my new truck I worked it into the deal. However, when I went to service 2 weeks later, they wanted to charge it with me. Might be worth it to talk about how you have poor cab heat and want it fixed.

I love the way this high idle works with the cruise control. It doesn't matter what the temp is, it works. It hasn't been cold enough to worry about the high idle here yet, and with my old truck even if it was cold the truck had to sit for a long period of time to get the high idle working.

Sorry HorseHauler,
The feature do not apply to the 03 becuase the cruise control operations were being done by the PCM box but starting with the 04 the PCM box is gone and the engine ECM does the cruise control and runs the automatic transmission also.
The idle up feature uses the speed control servo to move the idle up to the 1100-1500 range when activated with the controlls.

the "03" does have the cold weather high idle....mine seems to work around the below freezing area...and like Artie says you have to use a stick for the manual high idle feature on our "03's".

What about for the manual trannies? I'd like to have a high-idle feature on my 04.5 6-speed..

The high idle TSB being talked about is ONLY for '04s with automatics. Not any 04.5 nor any manual trans.

I had it done on my '04. Works well. Kind of had to fast talk the dealer into doing it. Not much of a problem with LOW cab heat down here in the Keys. I do visit the grandkids at Christmas in Michigan. No charge for applying the TSB. Done under warranty.

What is the TSB number, I talked to the dealer about it, and he told me about the "cold" high idle, but there was'nt any thing he knew of to manually raise the idle.

The TSB is '04s only. I see from your sig that your truck is an '04.5. Doesn't work on those. Only the 555 with automatic trans.
