How to diagnose faulty injectors?

Well heres the scoop. Lately my 04' has been getting worse fuel economy than it usually does (14-15mpg vs 17-18mpg). I thought maybe it was just my predator being set on extreme so I turned it down to the tow program. No change in fuel economy. The fuel filter is fresh, as is my air filter. I use Power Service in every tank of fuel as well. Theres also times when it sounds like the engine is ticking more? I think my injectors are slowly on their way out but is there any way I can test/diagnose them? The truck itself has 203,xxxKms on it so thats why I'm thinking the stock injectors are crapping out.

Any suggestions?

Thanks guys

If you have access to a DRB III you can check % of each cylinder. Lowest cylinder would be bad injector for that cylinder. It is fastest way to check for injector problems that I always use. You can also use exhaust temp at each cylinder if you have accurate infrared temp tool.

Like said you will need access to a drb tool, but also have to cap each fuel line to the injector, and check the return fuel flow. Local dealer in Wainwright AB wanted 3.5hrs to do the checks. There doesnt seem to be anybody around that rebuilds CR injectors. I went Source Auto, dealer of F1 diesel. Don M @ F1 can rebuild them, but you have to buy his injector nozzles.

Could also be the winter fuel. Seem's to lower mpg's a little.

At this point I would pin the blame on winter fuel. Where you fill up ask them if they are using their winter blend yet. Here in N. BC they have switched over to the winter blend. Last year my mileage really took a hit during the winter months. As soon as the summer blend came back it came back up!

Another thing to check would be your oil level. Make sure you truck isn't making oil. Excess diesel will leak down and get in the oil pan and raise your oil level.

Is your truck blowing any blue/white smoke on start up in the mornings after sitting turned off all night? If so, drop your exhaust manifold one afternoon after parking the truck for the day/night...start it up and watch for which hole smoke comes out of...

Might want to do this on a weekend though so you're not without a truck...

Course, that is only if you're smoking some...

Getting your Power Service mix alittle rich could cause a drop in mileage too. After all it produces fewer BTU's when burnt so it yields less power/energy than diesel fuel.

Thanks guys. The truck puts out ZERO smoke other than a little black when I put my foot into it. I think they might be switching over to winter fuel here. I could also be imagining things when I hear certain noises from the engine. One thing I did notice yesterday, I went to check the oil level and it was down a little bit (around the ADD mark on the dipstick). I just changed the oil at 200,000kms so it seems a little odd that its eating that much. I don't have any major leaks either. Either way I'm going to keep an eye on the oil level and see what its doing.
