Gear Vendor Installed

Completed the installtaion of the Gear Venor tranny tonight on an 06 quad cab 6 speed, and took it for a short test drive and all seems well. I have had one on my 94 since 00 and love it on that truck. I will let yall know how the mileage changes. I have a log book on the truck and know every gallon of fuel that has been in it so we shold be able to get some comparisons.

If he has an 06 then he has a G-56 then he's a 3.73. No other option for the G-56 manual...

Incorrect. I do not know were this info came from. My truck is 4.10 with the g-56. Not trying to be argumentative.

No, for the 06 model year the only option was the 3.73s with the G-56 six speed manual. It may seem to act like 4.10s, and my buddies Ford with the ZF six speed 4.10s and I run the same RPMs on the highway, but they are indeed a 3.73. Lots of discussion on here about the poor highway gears in the G-56, which was corrected in later model years for a more highway friendly overdrive gear. The 48RE auto still had the option of the 3.73s or 4.10s if I remember correctly.

Snoyes is right. From the factory 4.10 was not available with the G56 trans.

Pete, if your turning about 2000 rpm at 63 mph then you like me have 3.73 gears and a G56 transmission. But hey it tows like nobodies business.

Well guys it is a 06 two wheel drive with 3.73. I got it out on the Interstate and here is the result. At 70mph in 6th the tach was showing 2250, flip on the GV and it drops to 1750. To me that is significant, it will take some trips before I have any mileage figures, but I sure do like it so far. Another thing I tried today, being lazy you know, I went through the gears until I reached 3rd, then fliped on the GV to continue acceleration, then skipped 5th and went to 6th with the GV now off. Works like a charm, no lugging of the engine and saves me one whole clutch stroke.

By the way if you have not used one of these units before there are ways I have found to eliminate the clunk when disengaging the GV. I simply flip it off as I pass through neutral, there is no torque on the drive line at this point and the GV happly disengages. This is my second GV, as I also have one on my 94 5 speed. Which will do 28 mpg at 70 mph on the Interstate unloaded in 5th with the GV on.

Hope this helps.

Wow! How much did it set you back? I have thought about buying one for my truck and I would probably do better for mpg than you as I have a NV 5600 w/ 3.73. The only thing for me I mine is a 4X4 and it would take a lot more drive line work!

Dropping the RPM 500 is sweet, but are you not getting much of a mileage increase? Seems to me you would be getting much better mileage, but from other guys that have done this, they say they see about 1-3 MPG increase. I would expect to see at least that (hopefully more) dropping 500 RPM....

It doesn't take any more drive line work it mounts to the transfer case and you can only use it in 2wd. They have a minimum speed or gear before you can use them I don't remember what exactly. You can't use them with an E brake either they won't handle the stress.

The US Gear unit mounts between the transmission and transfer case doesn't shift as smooth as the GV unit. The USG unit you can use in 4wd and you can use an E brake with them. The USG unit looks to be a bit more robust and would handle more power.

You'll have to verify this info for yourselves but that is how I remember it. I could be wrong.

How does this work on an automatic? Is there a switch you mount on the dash and work manually, or can you set it up somehow to automatically go on/off between gears as to make your 4-speed 48RE into an 8-speed?

Well I do not know what the mileage increase will be yet as I have not had this one out on the road enough.

My previous post stated that I skipped a shift from 3rd to 6th, that should have been 4th to 6th.

It is true that you can not use a GV in 4WD, the miminum engagement speed is 20 mph, and you can use one with an exaust brake, as you just wire it in to desengage when you put on the E brake.

The GV does work with an auto tranmission, as that is what this one came off of. I do not know how one uses it with an auto. I got this one from a close friend for 1K. The techincal help at GV is excellent, give them a call and they can fill in the blanks.
