How common would you say injector problems are?

I really think it has to do with the filtration. My '03 has 285k on the stock stix. I changed the fuel filter every 3k whether it need it or not. About 3 years ago I added an AD150 with the 2 mic Fleetguard filter and still have no issues.......knock on wood .

To go off the thread a little - can someone please explain what to look for when fuel gets in the oil past the rings? I know about the oil level rise on the dipstick but to notice that the leaking through would have to be bad. My oil on my 2003 stayed clean for at least 1500 miles. This one goes black in 10 miles. I still run 4000miles between changes though and seems to be ok.

DodgeChallenger, like I said above my truck runs beautifully, no smoke, no power loss, MPG staying the same etc. Dipstick never rose either because it was only 2.5%. Oil Analysis is the only real way to be sure. Mine came back at 1.5% and I kind of wrote it off as a fluke, testing error etc. Changed oil and ran 2000 miles and pulled another sample. 2.5%. SO I had one one the way. Still waiting to hear back on which one is bad as we speak.

The 2003 and the 2007 are very different engines. Injection events are different and the 04.5 to 07 5.9 trucks have in cylinder EGR with a 3rd Injection event. If you have an injector go bad the body of the injector cracks most of the time and sprays into the head never making it to the cylinder. This fills the crankcase with oil. If the injector sticks open or has an issue with the tip, that's when it gets into the cylinder and most of the time burns up hole (melted piston). Your dirty oil is normal. No need to worry. The minute mine goes in it's a dirty black color...

I run some gray diesel from power service every once in a while. Rarely use additive even in the winter unless below minus 10 F.
What's gray diesel

I believe he's talking about the gray bottle of Power Service additive as opposed to the white bottle.

OK I have my answer.. we hope. Injectors were pulled and tested. ALl of them came back totslly within spec for bosch. No body or nozzle damage. All connector tubes were also checked and inspected with a microscope.
Mechanic says what likely happened is one of my connector tubes was not torqued precisely to spec from the factory or came loose over time. THat they needed to be EXACTLY 37ft/lbs. No more, no less. If it was out of torq spec then it would allow some diesel to enter the crank case under the valve cover. THey said they will clean and reinstall them, change the oil, adjust the valves. Run it a couple thousand miles and resample oil. Thanks for all the help on here!

Just turned over 91K miles, one fuel filter change, and one ruptured fuel line to #4 injector. I have run probably about 10 K miles in Mexico burning Mexican diesel, don't know how much effect that would have. I do get a little better milage down there. I'm finally starting to get over 20 MPG now that it is starting to get broken in. Wish I got the milage that the computer says, (about 26).

i have a bad solenoid on the #6 injector on one of my 06's now at 110,000 miles no other injector problems on any of our other 06's i do have 2 micron filters on all cr's. the 03's have had injector problems from the day we got them. dodge would not replace one unless it tripped a code, they replaced 3 and we had a 4th occasionally sticking open for a few seconds. it would not throw a code, we tried to explain to warranty that it would damage the motor if it stuck open very long. her reply was if that is what it takes to find it ok. about three days later 10 miles from the dealer it stuck open his mpg went to gpm and made it about 3 miles before ruining the engine they put a new short block and head on and only replaced the one injector. one of the two remaining injectors started sticking but not long enough to throw a code we finally came to an agreement with the dealer we paid the exchange price for the two injectors and they paid the labor and warranty even complained about that

There are thousands upon thousands of trucks that have never had an issue. When reading these forums, take everything with a grain of salt, as the only people who post are those with problems. For every person having problems, there are probably 500 that are not.
