Hmmm. New trans or new truck w/ 6 speed

Well, I was backing up a hill yesterday with my trailer loaded to about 12-13000lb gvw and the trans was slipping really badly. I have not had a problem prior to this but I don't want any problems in the future. I've been thinking about getting a new 05 w/ 6 speed but really wish I didn't have to go that route since I sit in lots of traffic each day. On the other hand, this truck has been great other than the minor trans issues I've had. So now I'm trying to decide if I should get the new truck or spend a couple more grand and just get me a complete new trans for this one.. I only have 42,000 miles on this truck and it pulls the trailer like it's nothing even though I only make a measly 300hp and 554tq.

What say you??

If you find yourself sitting in traffic often, I'd opt to upgrade the tranny.

Disregarding the cost delta from selling this one to buy a new one - who knows what kind of issues you'd buy into with the next one.

Personally I dont think the 6 speed is too bad in traffic. I live on Long Island, so I think I qualify as someone who knows what traffic is. First gear is so low on these trucks that if you leave enough distance between you and the person in front, just let her idle about 2 MPH. I can judge the traffic in front of me and time it so I do minimal clutching. JMO

I'd go for a "built" 48RE...

All good points men. That's why it's a tough decision.

I don't think it a direct bolt in from a 47re to a 48re. Aren't the electronics different? Plus, I've already got the DTT TC and VB for the 47re so that would save me some $$$...

Zilla - upgrade your trans. You don't know what probs you might inherit with the new truck, you already are part of the way there as far as trans upgrades, and you are lucky enough to have an emissions equip free 03.

The electronics probably are different. If it was me and your satisfied with the truck then I would opt to upgrade the tranny, new clutch packs etc. especially if you already have the TC and VB. Alot less money overall. Besides the next big issue with the 05 trucks could easily be the clutch relative to clamping force on the revised flywheel. Southbend says they have a fix but thats another upgrade to suffer through. JMO.

Drop a built tranny in it.

It will cheaper then having new or higher payments.

You will know that its "solid" now, and not have to worry about the trans.

Plus you know what is with this truck....the new one...its a whole new ballgame

I think I will go the new trans / TST route. Oops, did I mention that if I get a new trans I'm getting a TST box? I guess it's time to move this topic to the perf section............
