I'm looking to find out if the valve lash adjustment specs are the same for a 2003 5.9 HO as they are on a 5.9 24v ISB?

I adjusted the valves per the specs. Engine idles quieter now.....dam. i liked the old sound.

 

What exactly is that barring tool? Suitable substitute?

 

Barring tool is used to rotate the engine instead of trying to get a socket on the crank. It is a lot easier to rotate the engine and get TDC exact. Way overpriced though!

 

Substitute for the barring tool is a deep well socket on a 1/2" drive socket wrench onto the alternator pully nut, and rotate the engine backwards. Worked great for me. Just have to remember if you have a manual transmission to put it in neutral before turning the engine.
