Have a "Dusted Out" motor with 92K miles...now what???

I have a 2006 with the 5.9L CTD and the engine has excessive blow by from an alleged Dusted Out condition. What are my options??? Reman short block with my discount is $7500 from Mopar. Any ball park figures out there what an overhaul of a short block costs? Anyone know any good Diesel repair shops in South East Michigan or in Maryland. Current the truck is in Maryland but may drag her up here to fix.

Engine is supposed to have most of the cross hatching worn off all the cylinders with 1 and 6 being the worst. The turbo is reported to be ok and the head is reported to be ok. Currently the head was removed at the dealership for inspection.

From what I have read you can do a rebuild for about $5K...it sounds like you'll need to sleeve those 'dusted' cylinders. Do you have pictures you can post?, that way someone who really knows what to look for can chime in with more info for you.

It is a term used by Chrysler and Cummins to explain excessive dust debris inggested by the engine that polished the cylinder walls and wears a groove in the rings over time...resulting in excessive blow by and loss of power. They usually try to link this with poor maintenance or a tuner installed on the truck which causes higher boost levels thus pulling dirt through the factory filter into the engine.

Im no expert by any means, but you say the turbo is fine....if all that debris got to the engine, wouldnt it have damaged the turbo on its way in????

Yes...I made this point to the dealership and to the Service contracts people too.....and they still denied the warranty claim.

At this point I need to try and get her back up and running....so trying to find my best options to keep the cost as low as possible and still do the job correctly.

I would not believe the turbo is ok if there was enough dust to take out the rings / cylinder walls. Also have you inspected the cylinders yourself? I wounder if you didn't have rings fail and take out the cylinders verses dusting. Also I would look for the spray pattern on top of each cylinder, if you still have the original injectors which are known to fail, you may have a totally different problem that caused the failure.

I would be taking pics of the filter minder at to what it shows,,go get a oil sample, and have the injectors checked and hire a lawyer,,,unless there is more to the story and you just didnt take care of your truck, then it is what it is.

Oil sample is your best friend. Rebuild it if you have too. Find a good shop though. It will be worth the tow bill to take it to Tim at TRE Diesel in Virginia and get a quality job. It shouldn't be about money, Good quality is what you want so you don't have anymore trouble.

The truck has been very well maintained. I will be documenting everything. i need to get the pistons out and take good pictures of the rings. If the upper ring is grooved with a lip on the top she has dusted out. If not then it is another issue. I also will take good pictures of the bores. If the bores are wavey and polished then it is dusted....I need to get it totally apart. That is my project the later part of the week.

Did they have any response in terms of alternate possibilities if no turbo evidence of dusting? Overheated, wrong oil type put in etc

I would have expected some type of logical explanation behind their official denial of claim in writing
